Description:

Viktoria and her 3 babies were rescued from a high kill shelter. This sweet mama was in some rough shape. We're getting her back to good health with lots of good food and some TLC. She will need to continue to gain weight in her new home as the shelter environment has been causing her stress and therefore weight loss.

Volunteer update: Viktoria has been living in our front office for a couple of days and she seems to get along well with dogs her size and small dogs who have short hair. We're not sure why she doesn't seem to like the fluffy dogs..maybe she thinks they are cats or rabbits? But i would not place her with a small breed fluffy dog.

Medical update: Viktoria has demodex Mange and is being treated with an oral medicationl each day to help her skin recovery. If adopted we will provide at least 1 month worth of medication.

Like many dogs in the South, Viktoria is heartworm positive, but don't let that stop you from adopting a great dog. We are treating her with monthly heartworm preventive, our preferred method. Many heartworm positive dogs go on to lead long and healthy lives.

PRBJtreats ALL of our dogs with monthly Heartworm preventative. HW+ dogs are treated with the recommended slow method, using monthly HW preventative as it is gentler on the animal’s system than the more invasive, injection method. Most dogs that are Heartworm positive can lead healthy, normal lives if the disease is caught early and treatment began. There are different options to treat HW and new owners may choose to redirect their type of treatment with direction of their vet.All HW+ dogs have a HW slow treatment info sheet in their adoption folder which will be provided to new owners.

*** Are you not familiar with Rottweilers? According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Rottie is calm, trainable, courageous, and devoted to their owner and family. The Rottweiler is probably descended from the Italian Mastiff. During the Middle Ages, it was used as a herd dog. It was bred in the German town of Rottweil in Wurttemberg. Practically extinct in the 1800's, the breed population began a comeback in the early twentieth century due to the efforts of enthusiastic breeders centered in Stuttgart. Some of the Rottweilers talents include: tracking, herding, watchdogging, guarding, police work, carting, competitive obedience, and schutzhund. They have a reliable temperament. Protective, he will defend his family fiercely. They require owners who can handle their massive size. The Rottie is a natural guard dog with a mellow temperament. They are highly intelligent and have proven their worth beyond question in police, military, and customs work over many centuries. This breed needs a lot of companionship and socialization to be truly happy. They can be aggressive with other dogs and should be kept on leashes in public places. Friends and relatives of the family are normally enthusiastically welcomed. Strangers can get no further than the sidewalk. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
