Foster Update 3/6/13: I guess Maddie is going to be content to be a Pretty Kitty. She has her moments during the day when I can pet her, but it's pretty much a quick swipe down her back and tail in passing. We do have a game we play at night now that allows me to pick her up and pet her. Where ever she is in the house, when she hears the TV turn off or the iPad cover close, she knows it is time for bed. She'll come running into the living room and jump up on the DVD stand to wait for me. I'll talk to her and pet her and then we'll race up the stairs. She then knows the next thing I'll do is to put the blinds and curtains down, so she'll go over to the windows and talk to me while I'm doing that. Once that is over, I can scoop her up and scratch her head and neck and she loves it. Once that is done I'll put her on the bed and she'll curl up and wait for me to go to bed.
She's pretty much decided any loving has to be on her terms, but when she does decide to love she is very sweet and cute.
7/10/12: Maddie has become a little more accepting of petting. She has starting getting up on the computer desk and will lay right next to the mouse or, of course, right in front of the keyboard. I take these moments and pet her back and then slowly move towards her neck and head. She's not completely tolerant of it, but a lot more so than she has been. I've been able to scratch her under the chin and on the cheeks without her leaving. I only do it for a short time so she doesn't become to bothered with it. She has this adorable trill that she will do if she finds herself alone or if she is in the mood to be pet. I'm always listening out for that.
5/17/12: Maddie understands that petting means love and will approach me to be pet, but if I go near her head, she lets me know I've gone to far by turning around and walking away. She still does not like to have her head touched, but I can pet her from mid-back, down to the tip of her tail. And what a tail. She was a fluffy little girl (thus her nickname "Fluffy") but she has sleeked down as she has gotten older, except her tail is still as fluffy as ever. It's almost like it is on the wrong kitten, but she wouldn't be the same without it.
She allows me to brush her as well, but again, nowhere near the head. She likes to play, so we will take some toys and she will wrestle with them (and my hand sometimes). The newest craze is the ball in the track. She loves to sit there and send that ball into circles. And when she isn't playing, she is very nicely posed right in the center of it.
She will get up on the couch with me and nap and she has started sleeping in the bed pretty consistantly. I will usually find her at the foot of the bed in the morning.
4/8/12 : Maddie is a great little kitten. She and her siblings were found abandoned in a parking lot at 4 weeks old. Despite this cruel start, she is a very sweet kitten. As all kittens do, she wrestles and plays with her siblings and foster brothers and sisters, though she does has a bit of an independent streak in her. She is quite adept at entertaining herself and does everything on her own terms. She eats when she wants to, not while everyone else is eating. She can play with any matter of toys on her own as well. She does enjoys going out on the back porch to wrestle and run but really doesn't seem to be concerned with what is going on outside. She knows her place is inside where she will be pampered and loved.
Human cuddling and loving have to be on her terms. She is a little shy of petting and does not like to have her head touched. As her siblings have been adopted and there are less kittens in the house, she seems to be warming up and wanting to interact with me more. She has started to allow more petting and will even come up on the couch and bed with me. Maddie will need someone who is gentle and patient to help her learn to be comfortable with all the love and attention she will get and deserves.
