Foster Update: I am fostering Osaka and Paris. Osaka is the more adventurous one. She plays with my 2 yr old, 65lb, american bulldog/terrier mix (Samson) as much as she can. She also plays with her sister as much as she can! :) While they both are very cuddly and love people, Paris is always the first one to run up to me and want to be held. She also loves my dog Samson and does her best to play with him too. If Paris and Osaka get into it, and you hear puppy growling, its almost always Paris :) They both still have blue eyes and their favorite toys are a piece of rope, and my dog's massive bone they they try to chew. Their diet consists of a soft food mixture of pumpkin, soft puppy food, and slightly blended hard puppy food. I use enough water only to make it soft - I no longer make it a soup texture. They eat 4 times a day: 7am, 12pm, 5pm, and then around 10pm. I keep hard puppy food out and water all day and they are learning to nibble the pieces successfully and drink water. They are absolutely adorable and so lovable! Everyone who sees them, wants them! :)
Foster Update: They are doing amazing! Their personalties are showing more and more. Paris is the lover of the 2. Though she can get feisty and loves to tumble with her sister and play with out dog, she has the "love me" look down! She will sit and look at you with her head tilted so you can't resist her. Osaka has a very playful and curious spirit. She loves to explore and will follow our dog farther and farther each day. As their comfort and curiosity expands they have begun to stall coming back inside. Both sisters are beginning to know when you are telling them no, but mostly they just come up to you adn lick you because they think you are just loving on them. While their main diet is Iams puppy hard food, they like to do everything our dog does. Therefore, they stand on their back legs to reach his bowl and will nibble on his food. (he eats blue buffalo hard food). They have graduated from the tub to a large crate due to the fact that Osaka learned how to get in and out all by herself leaving Paris lonely in the tub and leaving us a "surprises" on the floor! haha. They have adjusted well to the crate and whining was decreased by surrounding the crate with cardboard and towels - making it more like a den for them. I have cut both Osaka and Paris's nails twice and have begun brushing their teeth every day to get them used to a doggie toothbrush. Best results are right after a nap while they are still a little sleepy. I love both of the puppies and they will have an amazing first Christmas! They will definitely be an amazing addition to anyone's family:)
Foster Update: They are doing great! I just got them leashes and collars because they were learning how to dodge me in bushes so they wouldn't have to come inside, lol. Well they absolutely Hate! the leashes, ha. They want their freedom back but I am sticking with it. They scratch at their collars all the time and almost refuse to walk when on the leash. It's kinda funny, such personalities! They are starting to recognize their names and they are just beginning to understand when we are upset with them:) They LOVE all people and dogs! At Christmas we had another dog their besides ours and they played with them just as well. I still brush their teeth everyday, right after a nap and though I can't clip their nails too often I do touch/rub their paws often. They definitely know they are loved!!:)
According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the first traces of a dog similar to the Basenji are found in Egyptian tombs and wall drawings of five thousand years ago. Also called the Congo Dog, it was brought to Europe in 1934. English breeders refined it and exported it all over the world. In Africa, it is used as a guide in the forests, to warn against the approach of dangerous animals, and as a very active pack-hunting dog of small game. The Basenji is alert, affectionate, demanding, energetic and curious. It loves to play and makes a good pet, as long as it is handled regularly from an early age. It is very intelligent, responds well to training with a strong desire to please. They can be reserved with strangers. The Basenji is somewhat aloof, but can also form strong bonds with people. It should not be trusted with non-canine pets. They are usually patient, but do best with older considerate children. The Basenji dislike wet weather. They like to chew, so giving them lots of toys of their own would be a good idea. The breed likes to climb and can easily get over chain wire fences. Basenji are very clever at getting their own way, they succeed less by obstinacy than by charm. It has the unique properties of not barking (it makes a low, liquid ululation instead) and of cleaning itself like a cat. It can be described as speedy, frisky, tireless at play and teasing the owner into play. Their strong desire to play can lead to behavior problems if left alone. Most Basenji problems usually involve a mismatch between owner and pet. The owners mistake the adjective "quiet' to mean inactive instead of noiseless; thus, they become harassed by an active, though relatively silent , dog. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
