Foster Update:  Casablanca and Seoul seem to being adjusting well - they've both gone to the bathroom since they got here, and seem to like their new playground, i.e.: my kitchen, a lot.  Their personalities are definitely coming out already.  Seoul is the charmer and the lover - she always wants to be held.  I also think she is going to be the smaller of the two.  Casablanca is gorgeous - she's going to be a beautiful dog - but much more independent.  I gave them a tennis ball, which they both played with a bit, but Seoul really took to - she carried it around for about 5 minutes.  I also gave them a "soft-toy" - one of my fluffy socks tied in a knot - that Casablanca REALLY liked.  She's sleeping with it right now.

Foster Update:  Seoul is an adventurous dare-devil who has a little gazelle in her.  She runs and leaps and wants to "help" with everything.  She's fearless and smart - she's quickly learned what "no" means and is doing much better at stopping what she is doing when told to stop.  I think that's pretty amazing for 6 weeks!  She definitely knows what she wants, and is very determined to get it - she will be a great dog for someone who wants to do agility or tracking or advanced obedience (or any type of training where she'll be making her own decisions), as her smart independence will make her a great dog for training.  Her innocent face makes her a favorite with my house guests - she does have the sweetest expression and loving eyes.

Foster Update:  I found my big-girl bark this week!  I'm getting so grown up - I have tripled in size since my foster took me in - I now weigh over 6 lbs. and am 7 weeks old.  I eat dry dog food and understand how to drink out of the water bowl by myself and go in search of it after a long play-time.  I'm an adventurer at heart - I love to go exploring by myself and wait for someone to come and find me.  I'm particularly found of hiding under dressers and chairs and peeking just my nose an eyes out.  How cute am I for figuring out that game?  If no one comes looking for me, then I will run with my ears flying back as fast as I can to the room where everybody is and bark!  And boy, am I getting fast!  I've been watching the (really) big dog that I live with run around chasing toys and now I do it, too.  I love my sock toy, and my foster mom has promised that I can take it with me when I leave.  By this time next week, I'll be old enough for adoption, spayed and ready to find my permanent home.  I can't wait to meet my new family - I have so much love to give.  Don't you want to play hide-and-seek with me?

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the first traces of a dog similar to the Basenji are found in Egyptian tombs and wall drawings of five thousand years ago. Also called the Congo Dog, it was brought to Europe in 1934. English breeders refined it and exported it all over the world. In Africa, it is used as a guide in the forests, to warn against the approach of dangerous animals, and as a very active pack-hunting dog of small game. The Basenji is alert, affectionate, demanding, energetic and curious. It loves to play and makes a good pet, as long as it is handled regularly from an early age. It is very intelligent, responds well to training with a strong desire to please. They can be reserved with strangers. The Basenji is somewhat aloof, but can also form strong bonds with people. It should not be trusted with non-canine pets. They are usually patient, but do best with older considerate children. The Basenji dislike wet weather. They like to chew, so giving them lots of toys of their own would be a good idea. The breed likes to climb and can easily get over chain wire fences. Basenji are very clever at getting their own way, they succeed less by obstinacy than by charm. It has the unique properties of not barking (it makes a low, liquid ululation instead) and of cleaning itself like a cat. It can be described as speedy, frisky, tireless at play and teasing the owner into play. Their strong desire to play can lead to behavior problems if left alone. Most Basenji problems usually involve a mismatch between owner and pet. The owners mistake the adjective "quiet' to mean inactive instead of noiseless; thus, they become harassed by an active, though relatively silent , dog. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
