Foster Update:  Manila and Shanghai are doing great and adjusting well socially.  They are really adorable pups.  They are very funny in their play.  They are starting to respond to their names and are eating canned and dry puppy food mixed now.  They are little chubby buddies.  They scrap a little bit and play rough with each other sometimes as can be expected with most siblings.  They love to play with my boys, ages 5 and 7 and follow them around.  They like to play with our malti-poo Tobe too.  I have been working on taking them outside to go potty and both are making an effort.  They do still have accidents in the house but they are starting to get used to going outdoors to do their business.  It shouldn't be too hard for them to be potty trained as they get a little older.  They have been playing alot with small size tennis type balls, squeak toys and rope toys.  They really like to chew.  They really love the stuffing-less raccoon I got them and like to curl up on them and snooze.  Our family has enjoyed having them in our household and they would make anyone who adopts them a great addition to the family.

Foster Update:  Shanghai is very sweet with a little fiestiness to her personality.  She loves to play and run around.  Her brindle coloring is beautiful and has the most irresistable face.  She is the stockier of the two and really speaks her mind.  She doesnt back down from a scrap with her sister.  She loves to nuzzle up on your legs in the floor and dozes right of with a little snuggling.  She gives lots of kisses and playful nudges.

Foster Update:  Shanghai and his siblings are doing very well.  They are socializing with our Malti-Poo, Tobe, and have fun playing in the yard. They love to run and romp around.  My boys are really liking having puppies to play with too.  They are adjusting to their environment and eating canned and dry food mixed. All four have a healthy appetite. They like playing with tug ropes and chew toys.  Each one is really developing their own personality.  Milan is very affectionate and loves to be petted. Shanghai is very playful and likes crashing out at my feet after a hard play day. Bogata is very social and likes to be held on your lap and Singapore is the shy one. They will make great additions to someones home when they are adopted.

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the first traces of a dog similar to the Basenji are found in Egyptian tombs and wall drawings of five thousand years ago. Also called the Congo Dog, it was brought to Europe in 1934. English breeders refined it and exported it all over the world. In Africa, it is used as a guide in the forests, to warn against the approach of dangerous animals, and as a very active pack-hunting dog of small game. The Basenji is alert, affectionate, demanding, energetic and curious. It loves to play and makes a good pet, as long as it is handled regularly from an early age. It is very intelligent, responds well to training with a strong desire to please. They can be reserved with strangers. The Basenji is somewhat aloof, but can also form strong bonds with people. It should not be trusted with non-canine pets. They are usually patient, but do best with older considerate children. The Basenji dislike wet weather. They like to chew, so giving them lots of toys of their own would be a good idea. The breed likes to climb and can easily get over chain wire fences. Basenji are very clever at getting their own way, they succeed less by obstinacy than by charm. It has the unique properties of not barking (it makes a low, liquid ululation instead) and of cleaning itself like a cat. It can be described as speedy, frisky, tireless at play and teasing the owner into play. Their strong desire to play can lead to behavior problems if left alone. Most Basenji problems usually involve a mismatch between owner and pet. The owners mistake the adjective "quiet' to mean inactive instead of noiseless; thus, they become harassed by an active, though relatively silent , dog. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
