Sweet Lilly is one of a litter of puppies born at the end of January. Their momma, Gisele, was left pregnant, abandoned in a yard, when her owner moved. Fortunately someone brought her to the Bervard Shelter where she gave birth to seven puppies on January 26, four girls, three boys, all as cute as pie!
We expect this liter of puppies to be ready for adoption around the end of March, early April. We will switch their status to Available for Adoption one week before their scheduled surgery. At that point, if you are interested in adding one to your family, you may submit an application. Please do not do so prior to their availablitly ~ we do not adopt on a first come, first serve basis, but strictly on finding the right home for the right pet.
Foster update 2/24 - we've had these cutie pies almost 2 weeks and they have done nothing but grow. It has been so fun to see them crawl, then walk, then run in a week period. We say we should have named Lilly - Dora the Explorer, as she has no fear about venturing about across the wilds of the backyard all on her own. She is friendly and sweet.
3/14 update: Lilly seems to be very smart - she is always the first pup to try something new and the one to figure out how to get out of the pen. She will be a great dog for any family! Please keep mind that commiting to adopting and raising a puppy is a huge job! Nothing is cuter than a puppy, but please remember they are blank slates and must be taught not to bite, scratch, jump. It takes a lot of time, effort and training in order for the puppy to grow up to be a good canine citizen.
She will be spayed early in the week of March 23rd and be ready for her forever home. Lilly is in a foster home and is not at our Adoption Center.
*** According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
