About Petra the Sweet Tempered Calico | |
Foster Update 2/4/13: Petra is all grown up and is a beautiful white calico. She has none of the "Princess" tendancies that calico cats often have. She is laid back, sweet tempered and calm. She snuggles with you on the bed at night, velcroed to you. She does still play "cover monster" and any feet moving under the bed covers are fair game to her! Her best friend is Dervish, also available for adoption. She puts up with his enthusiastic ways and gives him a smack on the nose when enough is enough! Petra definately needs a feline playmate in her new home. She is a great sidekick to Dervish - the two make a funny and entertaining couple!
Petra is a little diva in the nicest possible way. She loves attention and will jump on your lap as soon as you sit down. She has been known to push other kittens off to get the best spot! She gets on well with the two large but gentle resident dogs and cats of all ages. She sleeps with her Foster Mom and Dad at night & after a couple of gentle scoldings for imitating a jumping bean and playing "cover monster", she settles down to sleep for the night.
"Calico" refers to a cat's coloring. It is not a separate breed. One study has attempted to trace the origins of the coat pattern, and the research led them to port cities on the Mediterranean and in Northern Africa, the theory being that the cats were on board the ships that sailed those trading routes. (Cats were frequently employed on ships to keep rats away from the cargo.) Male calicos are rare--only 1 in 3,000--and are usually sterile. Calicos are believed to bring good luck. In some parts of the US, they are called money cats. The Japanese maneki neko--"waving cat"--figurine is almost always a calico.
