Foster Update:  Howey is a fun and playful Labrador/Border Collie mix looking for a good, active family.  Howey is a sweet, affectionate, and rambunctious puppy who is always looking for something to keep him entertained. He has a friendly and happy disposition, and shows his trust and contentment by sleeping on his back while running in his sleep. He is especially happy to see you, and welcomes you home by wagging his whole butt with excitement. At first Howey is a little hesitant in new situations, but will adapt quickly and will welcome the attention.  This smart little man has taken to obedience training easily, and is on his way to being house-trained. He pays close attention to other dogs around him and quickly picks up their grown-up behaviors. He is very consistent, so you can expect the same reactions from him throughout the day. For example, he will always follow you into the kitchen to remind you where his ‘cookies’ are kept!  Howey receives many compliments on his beautiful medium black coat with a white chest, and hints of brindle mixed through. He has deep, bright eyes and looks like he has a big smile on his face. Howey’s big paws predict that he will grow to be a larger dog that will need room to run at his new house. Right now he has a great ‘floppy puppy’ quality that shows he hasn’t adjusted to his rapidly growing body just yet.  He is an energetic little guy that needs an active family to make sure he gets plenty of exercise each day. He has lots of fun with his toys, but would love to have another dog to play with. He plays often and hard, but always takes a moment to check-in with a big kiss before bounding off again. The only thing he will love more than you is getting rubbed and scratched- especially on his belly!  Howey will bring a lot of fun, loyalty and laughter to his new family. He is good with children but might be a more appropriate dog for older kids due to his playful nature. He would thrive in an environment where he has lots of room to run, and an active playmate to keep up with him!

*** According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
