Description: Trey is a very special dog with a very special story. It is actually a rather sad story. On December 24th he was hit by a car and picked up by Bradford County Animal Control with a broken leg. They just let him lay in the kennel unattended because they didn't want to spend the money on surgery. You can see him in the photo, in the kennel, holding his leg up. A volunteer got in touch with a vet who said that he would do the surgery for free. Then he backed out, saying he would only do it if there was already someone lined up to adopt him. Finally, the volunteer drove the dog to Judy on January 11th and begged her to take her. Well, if you've ever met Judy, you know the answer. Unfortunately, by the time we got her, the vet was unable to save the leg ~ it had been almost a full month since the accident. But you know, this is one resiliant dog! He is doing great. And he is also very fortunate in that he has been sponsored by Irma, a wonderful woman who has helped offset these expenses to help assure her of a good life, one better then she has had so far. We are confident that Trey will recover and be loved by a wonderful family. Thank you, Irma, thank you to that volunteer in Bradford, thank you to all the people who care for the forgotten pets!
Update: I spent all day with Trey on Sunday at an adoption event. He is such a fighter...his lack of leg does not hold him back! He has not problem getting around with three legs. He jumped into and out of the van. He dragged me around the parking lot (yah maybe some leash training would help) at a very fast rate and even tried to pee with his leg up...yah that didn't work out well! He gets a bit growly in the crate and on the leash when other dogs approach but does fine off leash! He has the joy about him and everyone noticed him at the event. He loves to chew rawhide bones and be loved up! He would make a great pet for anyone!
03/28 Foster Update: Just thought I'd try to get something out for the website on Trey, the 3-legged Wonder Dog, as we are calling him. Well, that's what I call him. Husband calls him "Tripod." He takes everything in stride, or rather, in hop. He has a funny little hop that he uses when he's not running because of his missing leg, but it sure hasn't stopped him. This guy can still sprint around the yard - he's no slowpoke! He's a sweet guy who loves people, and loves nothing more than to be cuddled in a lap and be loved on. He LOVES to give kisses, too. He does tend to jump up on people, but we're working on that - he's just so excited to be alive that his exuberance shines through. He will sit very nicely, and loves treats. He gets along with other dogs just fine, and is a little curious about cats. He hasn't chased any of mine, though. He has coped with his missing leg far better than I would have thought, and it didn't stop him from hopping up on the kitchen counters once! (The boy can jump!) He will do very well with some obedience training, as he seems to be a quick learner and very eager to please. Oh, and he LOVES water! I don't have a pool, but I poured a bucket of water out to drink while he was roughhousing with my Border Collie, and he darn near got his whole front end in the bucket! I bet he'd love having a lake or pool to play in! Trey is just such a young sweet guy, and he seems to know that he got a second chance to spend with someone. Are you that someone?
