Red is a little Shepherd puppy.  Judy rescued this litter of seven on Independence Day, so needless to say, they were all christened with patriotic names.  Adorable pups, they should be ready for the forever home by mid to late July.

7/5 Foster Update:

"We've had the pleasure of fostering Red & Patriotic since July 12 and it has been a blast!  We're fairly new to fostering (and puppies in general) and have been pleasantly surprised at how smart these little guys are.  They were naturals on the leash from the getgo and quickly picked up on where to go potty. They really love their sqeaky toys and knot ropes, not to mention they love running up and down our stairs.  They bark and "talk" to each other when they wrestle but then quickly quiet down when they move back to their toys.  We especially love their hello kisses and watching them explore new things because they always look back for our approval.  I think Red is going to be a big lap dog because after he eats, he loves to come and curl up on my lap.  Patriotic is a funny puppy--he keeps us laughing with all of his rolling around on top of his toys.  Red has a little bit of anxiety when he doesn't know where Patriotic is but it goes away when you distract him with something.  When they go for walks, they like to meet everyone and everything.  They are all around wonderful puppies who deserve loving homes (preferably homes with good belly rubs)."

***According to dogbreedinfo.com, in April 1899, Capt. Max von Stephanitz registered a dog named Horan as the first Deutsche Schäferhunde, which means German Shepherd Dog in English. Known for their tremendous loyalty and courage, they are calmly confident, but not hostile. This breed needs his people and should not be left isolated for long periods of time. They only bark when it is necessary. Serious and almost human in his intelligence, they have a high learning ability. The breed is so intelligent and learns so readily that it has been used as a sheepdog, guard dog, in police work, as a guide for the blind, in search and rescue service, and in the military. The German Shepherd also excels in many other dog activities including schutzhund, tracking, obedience, agility, flyball, and ring sport. His fine nose can sniff out drugs and intruders, and can alert handlers to the presence of underground mines in time to avoid detonation, or gas leaks in a pipes buried 15 feet underground. A quick daily brushing is best unless hair in the house is not a problem. They should be bathed rarely, only once or twice a year to avoid skin oil depletion. Shepherds have a life expectancy around 13 years.
