Description: Doesn't Velvet look like such a sweet dog! Here is her story from her foster:
Meet Velvet!! She needs a permanent home –right now she’s in a foster home. She is 10 ½ yrs old according to records and appears to be mostly beagle although she is a mix. She’s about 35 lbs –and overweight. All up to date on shots, spayed, etc. She is FULLY housebroken & can “hold it” for 9 hours straight! She’s VERY calm, completely ignores cats, dogs, and other animals! All she wants is a forever home where she can live out the rest of her life surrounded by love! She’s great in the car too! If you sit next to her with your hand on the ground, she’ll nudge your hand with her little nose so that you stroke her – that’s all she wants in life! Love, peace & quiet, and a forever home!
History: Velvet came from a woman who at 73, passed away on 2/3/09. That was the same date she was taken to Orange County Animal Control. She had to stay there for 16 DAYS! They had to send a notice to surviving family to see if anyone wanted her – obviously no one did. So finally after 16 days she was taken out of OCAS and put into a foster home. She was so sad looking, shaking away in that kennel! I am assuming she was with her person her entire life – and she was obviously well loved by her person. She adapts very well to new environments and new people – she’s been coming to the foster mom’s office on a daily basis. She lived in a one-story home and is afraid of stairs in my home so I do carry her up and down. I believe she would thrive in a home with older (calm) people. I don’t think having young children around who might tug on her or chase her around etc would be suitable. However, that being said, she wouldn’t bite anyone –it’s just that she is so very calm, I feel a calm home is best for her. There’s not a mean or jealous bone in her little chubby body!
Velvet also qualifies for our Seniors for Seniors program so her adoption fee is only $50 for a senior!
According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Beagle is one of the most popular scent hounds because of his energy, willingness, and merry, sweet disposition. The breed probably originated as a cross between the Harrier and other hounds in England. The Beagle has been used in packs, alone, and in pairs, for hunting hare, pheasant and quail. He has also served as an excellent narcotics detection dog and makes a fine family companion. The Beagle is a gentle, sweet, lively and curious dog that just loves everyone! A happy little tail-wagger! Sociable, brave and intelligent. Calm and loving. Excellent with children and generally good with other dogs, but should not be trusted with non-canine pets, unless they are socialized with cats and other household animals when they are young. Beagles have minds of their own. They are determined and watchful and require patient, firm training. This breed doesn't like being left alone. Consider buying two if you will be gone a lot. A Beagle has a loud baying cry that was a delight to hunting horsemen, but can be disturbing to family and neighbors. Beagles have a tendency to follow their own noses. They may take off on their own exploration if let off their leash in an unfenced area. Energetic and possessing great stamina, the Beagle needs plenty of exercise, but a yard of reasonable size will take care of most of its requirements. A brisk daily walk will cover the rest. Always use a lead when walking this breed or you will be running the risk of it disappearing in search of wild game. They have a life expectancy of about 12-15 years.
