Finn is adorable! Have you ever seen anything so little in all of your life? When we first rescued this litter, they were just three days old. We thought they were Boxer mixes, but now we realize that they are most likely Chihuahua/Pomeranian! Gosh, that's a change, don't you think? OK, here's the story...

Just after Christmas, Judy received a phone call from a young man who had just found a litter of puppies on the side of the road. He said they were really young and had no momma. Could she help?

We've had situations like this. Unweaned puppies are hard ~ they have to be bottle fed ever two to three hours. They have to be stimulated to poop (lovely). They have to be kept warm. They have to be.... Well, you get the idea. It's hard. That's why almost all animal shelters euthanize such litters. They just don't have the ability to take care of them. And even with the best of care, they don't always make it.

Now, would you care to guess what Judy's response was to the gentleman. Yeah, you know her. "Absolutely! Bring them to me as soon as you can." We were worried because we expected him to bring them that day. But, ok, the next day he showed up with eight puppies! Oh my!!! Have I told you lately how wonderful our foster families are? We were able to divide them up a bit. Two families took two each. Another couple took four (they won't be sleeping any time soon). And just in case this isn't enough drama for you, one of the puppies has no front legs. We weren't sure if it is going to make it but don't you know Hope, as we named her, is dong great!

I guess we're a little crazy, huh? Well, not really. We're a rescue. It's what we do. We rescue the pets that no one else wants right now. That includes this litter that needed such intense care. That includes this puppy that is handicapped. We'll do our part. We'll trust God and our community to do the rest. I'll keep you posted....


1/5 Update:
This from the couple with four of the puppies: "Ok, we are 1 week into this and haven't lost our marbles yet. Although I don't know if we had any to begin with.

Puppies are doing well. Their eyes are starting to open, and they are starting to get a little coordinated, but not really coordinated yet. They are taking the bottle well so far. We have gone through almost all of the milk we have, so I'm going to run out to Petsmart or Walmart and see if I can find more. They are definitely gaining weight, as evidenced by my postal scale.

One of my dogs has apparently decided they need an auntie, and she has taken it upon herself to clean them up and stimulate them to pee and poop. I figure it's less work for me, and the dog interaction may be good for the pups. That, and they don't stink when she cleans them. This started spontaneously yesterday when I left the top of their carrier open-I l noticed some slurping and found her with her head all the way in. I have never seen her take to a litter of puppies before. In fact, I've never seen her pay the slightest bit of attention to any of the foster puppies we've ever had, so it's been really fun to watch. "

1/11 Update:
This just in from the couple with four of the puppies: " The littlest one has topped a pound and her sisters are nearing 1.5 already. Their ears aren't open, but eyes are. My Border Collie mix Sasha continues to bathe and stimulate them. They smell a lot better now that she's helping. I tried teaching them to lap milk, but we're not even close yet, so still the bottle for now. We're naming them after famous orphans in literature: Finn, Pip, Poe and Twist!"

2/22 Update:
All the puppies have been fixed and are ready for their forever homes! They are just about four pounds, a bit overwhelmed by life, but oh my! they are adorable!!!
