Mabel is a Treeing Walker Coonhound. She came to us with her puppies from a high-kill shelter. Very very sweet, she is also rather timid right now. It makes me wonder what she has been through.... I am sure she will just bloom in a calm, loving home.

12/9 Foster Update:
"Miss Mabel is precious. She is a bit skittish right now and fast movements do make her jump, but she is a love. Once you sit still for a little bit, and look away, she comes right over to you and just leans and wants to be scratched. She relishes in getting a good rub down, it's obvious she has missed out on it her entire life and has discovered something she truly loves that breaks the barrier from the "people are scary" personality she came into the shelter with. This girl is potty trained and asks to go out at the door. She also asks to go outside when something is bothering her too (ie-the vacuum). She will bolt out the door currently, so her future owners need to be aware of where she is every time a door to the outside opens. It is pretty clear, however, that this habit will go away once she gets comfortable in her home.

It is clear she has gone many times without food as she chooses to hide her food bowl under her covers rather than eating it all at once. It's very
cute, but very sad too!

She doesn't seem to know any commands but that will change shortly after we start working with her. She seems extremely intelligent and eager to please. She is definately a hound! She has her nose up in the air
constantly in a pointing stance! We haven't heard her bay or bark though...she is a quiet little girl!

She is a dog that gets along easily with other dogs...my two dogs LOVE her and my female, Bailey, has never liked any other dog living in her home except her brother...she's only tolerated her foster siblings previously.

As of right now, I wouldn't put her in a home with young or rambunctious kids as she gets startled easily. She would not hurt a fly, but I would hate her living constantly in fear/extreme anxiety.

Oh we love this dog. You know, there are some fosters that you just can't wait to get out of the house...and then there are dogs that you know you are going to truly miss when they leave...she is one of those dogs...she is as sweet and precious as they come!"

12/24 Foster Update:
We love Mable. She is becoming more and more of a dog every day. She now greets us at the door with “puppy wiggles” and a wagging tail. She even greets my husband and waits for him to love on her. She also, hesitantly, jumped up on me in greeting…I was shocked! A week ago, this girl would greet me with slow wagging tail with just her head peaking out around the corner of the room and very slowly make her way over and now she is jumping up! I scolded her slightly with more of a “I’m shocked” type of tone and she put herself gently down and had a look on her face like “oh sorry mom…I really don’t know what came over me.” She is VERY EXPRESSIVE with those big, beautiful brown eyes of hers.

She loves shoes. Everything is safe in your house…except for shoes. She isn’t very sneaky about stealing the shoes either, she will be laying at your feet and then get up and come back bouncing away with those big ears of hers super excited for her discovery! She also likes to surround herself with her toys, so she will make several trips to bring toys back to her bed in the living room and then lay there with a big pile under her paws, tail wagging away.

The only thing she loves more than shoes is her walks and if you have a dog park, she is in heaven. We either take an hour walk a night or 15 minutes to the dog park, play there for about an hour, then walk back. At the ends of these walks my dogs are ready for some water and to go play with their toys. Mable is NEVER ready to end her walks and will cry at the door a bit when you come inside. She does stop when you say no and walk away. She plays like a puppy at the dog park, running with all the dogs and yesterday she played fetch for the first time! Previously she would just watch the p
