Description: Eric came to us from a high kill shelter last fall and was quickly adopted by a wonderful family. A sweet and loving dog, he quickly wormed his way into their hearts. Then a rather odd thing happened. A few months later Eric started to become nervous around the father. Not the mother or the kids, just the dad. Eric would bark and growl and have trouble settling down when the father was in the room. They had a trainer work with him but they were unable to resolve the issue in fact, it seemed to grow worse. In our experience, this is usually because the person reminds the dog of someone who misstreated him. Eventually, the family decided, with a broken heart, to return Eric to us in the hopes that we could find him a home where he could fully accept all members of the family. I am sure we can. Again, in our experience, this is often an individual issue that doesn't repeat. Will you be the family who will give Eric his second chance? You'll be glad you did!
Volunteer update 11/11/08: Eric is a loving sweet dog. He does have some energy which i'm sure could be burned off with a good exercise schedule! He loves up everyone whom passes! He does very well with other dogs and shares a dog condo at our shelter with another young lab mix! He is very playful!
*** According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
