These wonderful babies came to us from a friend of Judy who rescued the mom so that the babies could grow up safely.  They are with a foster family who is loving them until they can find their forever homes. They hopefully will be ready for the 4th of July, so we named them after the best dog beaches in Florida!

The next door neighbor to the mom said that his dog was a Chihuahua and Jack Russell blend and based on the coloring of one of these precious babies, you can definitely see some JRT, but most of the babies look just like mom. Mom is no bigger than 6 pounds, soaking wet and might be a purebred Dachshund, but maybe there is something else keeping her very small and petite.  She is is a loving mother and has taken very good care of these babies.

Foster Update 6/21/14
Walton is like the big brother of the group. He tends to stay on the fringe and monitor what is going on. He plays with his siblings but does not tend to jump right in the fray. Although he is ok with being held, he is happiest on the floor. His brothers and sisters tend to gravitate around him as he is the calmer one of the group. He is a really good eater and eats about a cup of food a day mixed with a little bit of yogurt. He recently had a play date with an older dog and he had a great time and did really well. He loves to be outside and to play with his toys.

They eat Dogfordog Pork dog food, which can be found at Petco in Orlando or Wolgang Bakery. Made with brown rice, but otherwise grain free.

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Dachshund (pronounced dak sund) originated in Germany many hundreds of years ago. "Dachs" is the word for badger. The Dachshund was bred to hunt and follow these animals to earth, gradually becoming highly evolved, with shortened legs to dig the prey out and go down inside the burrows. Smaller Dachshunds where bred to hunt hare and stoat. Dachshunds have many "terrier" characteristics. They are versatile and courageous dogs and have been known to take on foxes and otters, besides badgers. Lively and affectionate; proud and bold, almost rash. Tenacious. Can be willful and clownish. Curious and mischievous, they are very clever and may attempt to train the owner rather than allow the opposite. Devoted to his family, some fanciers feel the long-haired variety is calmer than the other two types. The wire-haired variety is more outgoing and clown-like. All are slightly difficult to train. Dachshunds are good dogs to travel with. They are best with older, considerate children and are moderately protective. These little dogs like to bark (their barks are surprisingly loud for their size) and are compulsive diggers. They are generally okay with other pets, however, they can be jealous, irritable, obstinate and very quick to bite. Sometimes they will refuse to be handled. They should not be over fed, for this breed tends to gain weight quickly. They have a life expectancy of 12-15 years.
