Gala, her momma and her littermates were rescued from a backyard breeder. They came to us in sorry shape, emaciated and starving for love. All of them are beautiful Catahoulas and will make wonderful additions to their forever homes, but truthfully, Gala is the prettiest of the bunch! Everyone who sees her comments on her golden coloring and green eyes. And the way she moves is just like a deer, kind of prancing. Even when she approaches a new object, she stops, waits a moment, moves closer, stops, waits a moment,..... That is as opposed to my hounds who jump in first and ask questions later. Guess who I think is smarter? Prettier too, but don't tell Gus and Ralph. There are different strains of Catahoulas. Gala is from the one that was interbred with Greyhounds. It is very apparent in her petite build and deer-like movements. She is really spectacular! You can really see how small she is incomparison to other dogs when you look at the photo of her and Barney at the bottom of this page!
Foster update 8/12: Isn’t she beautiful? When she walks through my back yard, she has really tall ears and she looks like a little deer. She leaps like one also but I can’t catch her doing it on video. She’s very lovely. I hope someone totally wonderful gets her."
8-13-08 Foster Update: Yesterday I was training her a little periodically throughout the day. She is very food motivated so I just took some of her regular puppy kibble and walk to different parts of the house, say "Gala, Come!" She would come to me and then I would have her sit before I would give her food. She was doing pretty well. When I got up and gave her breakfast this morning, she ate some out of her bowl and then I noticed she was following me wherever I went. When I looked at her, she sat. I realized what she was doing. She was waiting for me to give her some kibble for coming to me and sitting. Smart dog!
8-18-08 Foster update: OK, so it's the first day of school and I admit it, I use my foster puppies to help wake my son up. Nothing like a face full of sloppy kisses and paws in your hair to get you out of bed. Or to at least get you awake enough to love back on the puppy. So I put Gala in with my son to "wake him up." Not so Gala. She put her paws on either side of his neck, bent her head and snuggled it up to his chest, and the both of them went back to sleep. Thanks Gala. Not what I had intended but it does show how sweet and gentle she is. She does like to play and has bursts of energy throughout the day. I give her chew toys or I take her for a walk. This afternoon, the 2 of us went to pick up my son from school. She sat so beautifully and calmly in the front seat with me. A group of kids came up to the van to pet her. The woman with them kept commenting on how well behaved and good Gala was. She didn't get hyper with all these kids coming up toher. She just sat there and let them pet her. I think she really enjoys being totally immersed in family life, as do most dogs. Does your family have room for Gala? She deserves to be a part of a really great person's life. Is that you?
Foster update 9-03-08 Now it's time for some basic care information. I could go on forever about all the cute things Gala does. But I want to tell you that she is housetrained. She can go out my dog door anytime she likes, but when I block it b/c of the rain or mud, she stands by the door and waits. She is great with all kids. Mine and everyone elses. My neighbors wanted a younge dog to play with for a little while so Gala went and had a sleepover with them. They had a great time! She has an incredibly thin coat which cleans very easily, nice with all the rain and mud I've had in my back yard. I'm not sure if this will change when she gets older, but as of right now, I haven't sen a hair shed off her body. It seems that she will be a low shedding dog, although again, I'm not sure if that will change later. She is learning good manners like sitting before she gets fed and before she gets a leash on and before she goes for a walk. She bikes very well. I bike her 2 miles alm
