Wishes was among a group of dogs that we resued from a kill shelter in Georgia. People often ask why we go to Georgia to rescue pets. Well, first, we don't go there. There is a whole network of independent volunteers who relay pets from Georgia shelters to rescues all over the south. Why do they do that? Well, they share our second reason ~ they are horrified at the cruel way pets are euthanized in Georgia. You see, they gas them in mass. The animals start to whimper after just a few seconds, and die crying. It is horrible. It is wrong. And it should stop. There are less painful ways to euthanize pets. We can't stop them, but we can at least save some of the pets.
And that brings us to Wishes. Do you like the name? I came up with it. Her name on her paperwork was "Ash", and somehow that seemed to represent to me all that she had left behind. Wishes, well, there was something wishful in her face the first time I saw her photo, the one with her against that cold cement wall....
Look at Wishes now. I am again drawn to her eyes, watching our volunteer, ask if to ask, "What do you want me to do? Is this ok?" She has that basic dog desire to please, to anticipate what you want. Look at that photo of her at the kill shelter ~ her tail is blurry because it is wagging! She is what wishes are made of!!!

Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
