Description:
Gizzy is a chihuahua that was surrendered by her owner because they could no longer give her the care that she needs. She is crate trained and likes other dogs. She is an alert dog and likes baths! She has previously only been an outside dog, only sheltered in cold weather. We are looking for someone that will keep her warm and spoiled as an indoor pet. Gizzy can be shy around small kids due to her age.

Foster Update:

2/19/14 - Gizzy has really come out of her shell this week. Now, that she's gotten over her cold, she is much more energetic and has taken a liking to chewing on deer antlers. She still has no desire to play with other dogs, but is starting to go out into the yard by herself now. She's even stopped following me every time I get off the couch, so this is a great sign that she's finally getting much more comfortable with her surroundings.

She walks very well on a leash and loves to lay in the sun. While she has a voracious appetite, she's still picky about treats. Although she's completely house broken and goes to the door when she has to go, she needs to go out immediately before she eats dinner, then immediately afterwards or she does pee on the floor. We think it's because dinner time is so exciting for her, she just can't contain herself.

At this point, I would still recommend a home with people who are there often to let her out as much as possible. She also suffers from separation anxiety and shows it by barking a lot, but doesn't become destructive. I've stopped putting her in a crate when I leave for an hour or two and haven't come home to any surprises. :)

She sleeps well throughout the night in a pet bed and shows no interest in wanting to get on my bed. She does have significant anxiety when traveling in the car, but does fine on short trips sitting on a towel in the passenger's seat. She would probably be much more comfortable if someone were holding her during the ride.

If you decide to make her a part of your home, just know that while she may become your shadow immediately, it will probably take her two to three weeks to become completely comfortable in her new surroundings. The rewards of adopting this little gem are huge!

2/8/14 - Gizzy is such a pleasure to have around! She's fully housebroken now and I've been leaving her out when I leave and loose in my bedroom at night, and she's been a complete angel. At night, she sleeps in my large dog's "cave", which is a travel crate with a pet bed inside and no door. She sleeps through the whole night without a peep and no accidents.
She's nearly over her cold and just has a slight whistling sound coming from her nose, but no more sniffling. She's still very picky about treats, continues to ignore our other dogs, has no interest in toys, and loves to kiss the tip of your nose.
Gizzy is a very quiet girl and hasn't barked once since I've stopped crating her.

She would make a lovely companion to most families with people who are home most of the time, so they can let her out often and don't have other dogs in the home or dogs who are older and calm. If there are children in the home, they must know how to be gentle.

Gizzy is such a wonderful little girl! When I brought her home, she was a bit nippy with my other dogs who are of various sizes, but after an hour, she warmed up to them. She isn't skittish or shy. She lets everyone pick her up and loves to cuddle on the couch. She still needs to be housebroken, but has had only one accident in the house. She goes outside every hour, but won't go outside by herself. You need to stand in the yard with her, but she is starting to explore further away and comes prancing as soon as she's called.

She's very picky about treats and only likes pieces of chicken jerky. She eats very well and nibbles on her food throughout the day and loves her dinner to be topped with fresh, shredded chicken. While she is put into her crate at night and when left alone, she doesn't like it and cries for a long time until she finally realizes that she has to stay in there until morning, or until we come home. She wakes up around 7:00am and starts barking to be let out. She simply doesn't like to be away from us and is a constant shadow.

Her crate time is the only time she barks. Even when our other three dogs are barking and carrying on because they heard something outside, she has no desire to run with the pack and stays quietly on the couch. She doesn't really play with any toys, but she doesn't have the urge to chew on things either. She also seems to have no desire to play with other dogs, but doesn't mind them being around. When you rub the back of her neck when she's standing, she raises one leg up. Sooo adorable!!!

While she hasn't been around any children yet, I don't see that she would have any issues with them as long as they are gentle with her. At the moment, she's getting over a cold, but is becoming much peppier now that she's starting to feel better. Also, she is excellent at taking her heartworm pill and you don't have to hide it in anything.

Gizzy would be great for most homes as long as she is with people who are able to take her out often. I'm sure she'd be thrilled to have parent(s) who let her sleep in the bed at night. Won't you make your house her forever home?

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Chihuahua is the oldest breed on the American continent and the smallest breed in the world. Native to Mexico, nonetheless it seems to have been introduced by the Chinese. It was only brought to Europe at the end of the nineteenth century. The Chihuahua is named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua where he was brought to the rest of the world by travelers. This breed is believed to have been sacred to the Pre-Columbian Indian nations. The Chihuahua is a popular, economical companion dog. Courageous, extremely lively, proud and enterprising, it gives and demands affection. Bold and saucy, it moves swiftly to avoid being stepped on. Chihuahua's are strong-willed, intensely loyal and become very attached to their owners, even to the point of jealousy. They like to lick their owner's faces. It is undeniably suspicious of people except for its owner. When strangers are present, it follows its owner's every move, keeping as close as possible. This breed may snap at teasing children, after all it is too tiny to get away. The Chihuahua must resort to his sharp teeth in self defense. It is not recommended for children. He can be noisy and may require patience to housebreak. Many owners simply paper train this breed. The Chihuahua hates the cold and may shiver, although this may be due to high metabolism as much as temperature or anxiety. It will tolerate and even appreciate a warm sweater on cooler days. They are good little dogs for apartment life. Although it is tempting to carry these dainty creatures about, they will keep fitter if taken for walks. A body harness is safer than a collar. Don't think that just because he is small he should be confined to a small space. Chihuahuas have a life expectancy of 15 or more years.
