Sailor and his friend Amy were surrendered by an owner who developed serious health problems. He is very friendly. In fact, if you try to pay attention to someone else while Sailor is standing there, he'll put his paw on your leg, as if to say "Excuse me, you're not finished with me yet." He is crate trained and house broken. He knows sit and give paw. He likes to play with toys, go for walks, and ride in the car. He would love a family to lavish affection on!
Volunteer Update: Sailor is a volunteer favorite!! We love having him at our Oviedo Mall Adoption Center. He loves kids and does very well with them. He is gentle and loves attention. He is such a sweetheart and loves on everyone that will give him attention. He is very well behaved and will make a GREAT pet for someone.
Like many dogs in the South, Sailor is heartworm positive, but don't let that stop you from adopting a great dog. PRBJ treats ALL of our dogs with monthly Heartworm preventative. HW+ dogs are treated with the recommended slow method, using monthly HW preventative as it is gentler on the animal’s system than the more invasive injection method. Most dogs that are Heartworm positive can lead healthy, normal lives if the disease is caught early and treatment began. There are different options to treat HW and new owners may choose to redirect their type of treatment with direction of their vet. All HW+ dogs have a HW treatment info sheet in their adoption folder which will be provided to new owners.
The Argentine Dogo is a loyal dog who makes a great guardian of the home and family. Playful and very good with children, giving kisses and cuddling. Highly intelligent and powerful, Dogos are easy to train if you are consistent, using loving but firm authority. The Argentine Dogo is not a breed for everyone. With the right owners even the more dominant Dogos can be submissive towards all humans and other animals. This breed needs someone who understands how to display leadership. Humans who are firm, confident, and consistent, this breed needs rules he must follow and limits to what he is and is not allowed to do. The objective in training this dog is to achieve a pack leader status. It is a natural instinct for a dog to have an order in a pack. When we humans live with dogs, we become their pack. In the 1920's the Argentine Dogo was developed in Argentina by two Argentinians, Dr. Antonio Nores Martinez and his brother Agustin. The brothers wanted an ideal companion dog that was also a good pack hunter and guardian. They are always white with the occassional black spot on the head.
