Description:

06/05/2015:  Beautiful Aleaha was re-surrendered back to Pet Rescue by Judy from her owners.  After having a home of her own for 2 years, some of her family members became allergic to her.  She is the sweetest girl and is very calm.  Aleaha is not great with cats, but seems good with other dogs.  She loves squeaky toys and likes to go on her walks.  She will sleep with you and will quickly become your best friend.  She is ready to find her forever home...Please come in a meet this sweet dog.

2013:  Notes from foster:  Aleaha is a sweet little girl who is just waiting to be someone’s princess, someone’s special girl.  She follows me around at my heel all day long, and if you sit down on the floor and pat the space in front of you; she’ll come and curl up in a C right in your lap.  She loves the kids, and they love playing with her.  She loves her toys, especially her tennis ball.  If you ask her, “Where’s your ball?  Get your ball!” she’ll immediately go on a search until she finds it.  She will play fetch until your arm aches, but whenever you are done, she’s fine with that, and will curl up in your lap again.  Her other favorite toy is a squeaky toy.  Many times I’ve walked into the other room to find out who is playing with her, only to find that she is alone, tossing her squeaky toy around and shaking it.  She’ll do tricks for treats, but she’s really more motivated by praise and contact.  She’s going to have a really close bond with her family and her favorite human.  She’s the kind of dog who gives you a certain look when you talk to her, like if only she could speak human, she’d lay some really profound wisdom on you.

Training:  She is crate trained, sleeps in the crate at night (though I know she’d rather be in bed with someone—I’ve found her nestled in the middle of my bed on more than one occasion), and she stays in the crate when I’m away from home.  She has had a few accidents in the house, but if we make sure to take her out several times a day, she is fine.  I think she must have been paper trained at one point, because her accidents are always in the same spot, right near the door, and she just does that instead of asking to go out.

Commands:  I don’t really feel like we’ve taught her anything, but more that we are just discovering what she already knows.  She knows sit, down, back (back up and let me go through the door), she comes when you call her name (but I doubt she’d do that with distractions), un-uh, off (off the couch/bed), ball, treat.  If you stand still and calm with a ball, treat or whatever it is she wants, she will go into a down position while she waits for you to give it to her—even when she is a quivering mess of excitement.  This is wonderful to see, and feels like great proof of her eagerness to please.

Energy level:  In a word, high.  She goes running next to the bike for a mile or two every morning, and she’d like to do it again at night, but usually at night we just go up and down the street a few times.  She LOVES to run, and run FAST.  She would love to chase squirrels and lizards, and when she is loose in the backyard, she searches the perimeter of the fence for an escape.  If she hasn’t been exercised on the bike, she will pull on the leash, but when she’s had a good run, she walks well on the leash.  She barks at other dogs or strangers, but when they get close she is friendly.

Best fit:  I think she’ll do well in anything from a small apartment to a large house with a yard as long as she has someone who will give her a good run every day---either on the bike, rollerblades, or running with her.  She fits in well with our kids, so she’d make a great family dog, but I think she’d do just as well with a couple or individual.  She really loves contact, though, so I doubt she’d be happy if she had to be home alone all day every day.  She’s going to have a really strong bond with her family or person, so I hope she finds a home with someone who is looking for a best friend or family member, and not just a dog.
