Rainbow and her puppies came from a kill shelter. Between there and here, she stayed for about a week with a foster mom, and this is what she had to say:
"Rainbow has let me, my husband, my daughter, and other vistiors to our house handle her puppies with no problem. It took a few days for her to become friends with my dogs, but she would chase the cats if they ran (I think she thought they were trying to play!) She knows 'sit,' 'down,' and 'off,' but if there is food involved, she sometimes forgets her manners. On the other hand, being food-oriented is good for training. She is quick to learn and eager to please. She loves to go on walks and is just so excited she will pull, but she responds to correction. She is housetrained.
"She is very quiet and rarely barks or whines, even when we aren't with her or she's separated from her pups. She's trying to wean them, but they'll still mob her. I set things up in her area so there is a barrier she can climb when she wants to be alone, and she can climb back over it when she wants to be with them. We also found out she can climb the chain link fence in the side yard and get into the back yard. She's not trying to get away, because she only does it when we're out there with our other dogs or with people.
"We are going to miss her because she is a very good and sweet soul."
*** According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
