Justine, her friend Jericho, and her babies Jem and Joni were found in the backyard of a house that the Orlando Police raided. Standard procedure is to call Animal Control, so they can contain any dogs that might be dangerous. They found the dogs were friendly, but seriously malnourished and full of worms. Luckily for this little family, one of our special officers was on the scene. He called Judy and drove right up to our shelter.

Justine has been very good about letting us help her puppies. She's let us take them out of the cage to handle them. She has beautiful eyes, and we know she is going to be a gorgeous dog when she gets some meat on her bones.

Foster Update 1/13/14:
Energy Level: Justine has moderate energy. She loves to go on walks, will run and play at dog parks, and will play fetch with a ball. She also settles down quickly once inside. She likes to snuggle with you if you are home.

Food: Currently Justine eats about 3/4 dry food and 1/3 cup green beans mixed in. She is given this twice a day. She had put on a few pounds at the shelter and needed to lean out a bit. So green beans was a healthy filler that didn’t have too many calories. She gobbles up her meals without any problems.

Adaptability: She has a great temperament. She was a bit nervous out on walks around the neighborhood at first. She had her hackles up frequently when she saw or heard something unfamiliar. Not as aggression, just out of nervousness. She’s gotten a lot more confident in the short time I’ve had her. Welcomed another dog in the house to stay when visitors came.

Behaviors: She does very well most of the time. The only issue we’ve had to work on is her jumping on people when wanting attention. She’s gotten better with that already and will continue to do well with consistent training. Also, she likes to chew paper and plastic when her human isn’t home. She goes through trash and can go on her hind legs to grab things. Even when she is left chew toys, she goes for other items. I have her gated in a certain area where she can’t access those things. Otherwise, she leaves a bit of a mess with the trash when you return.

Human Social Skills: She LOVES human attention. She is the biggest sweetheart and thrives off of your affection. She will get as close to you as possible and adores the belly rubs you give her! She’s one of the most affectionate dogs I have ever fostered.

Animal Social Skills: She does very well around other dogs. I’ve taken her to the dog park and she likes to run and play with the others. She has done well while my friend’s Jack Russell has stayed at the house for the last week. She can get nasty if there is food or treats out around another dog. She gets possessive. This is easily solved by giving both dogs their food or treats in separate areas. They are separated by a baby gate in my house while feeding and it isn’t a problem. I take both food bowls from the floor once they’re done and there are no incidents over food. However, I have been able to take treats out of her mouth with my hands and she does not snap or fight. It seems to only be around other dogs.

Commands: Justine knows sit, stay, and come. She is also learning off and drop. She is a good listener MOST of the time. Once in a while she will need a reminder or a correction. For the majority of the time she is very eager to please her human. She is food motivated and will learn quickly with treats.

Personality Quirks: This dog tries to hug you constantly. Her main job in her mind is give you love. She will slink into your arms, or lap, or under your legs, or anywhere she can cuddle up near you.

Ideal Home: Justine has a great temperament and would do well almost anywhere. She would love being the only dog, but would easily get along with another. Male companion would be best. A yard would be great, since she loves to run around. I don’t have one, so we walk everywhere! As long as someone can give her love and affection, she is your companion for life. I have not seen her around children, so I cannot know for sure how she would react.

Staff Update 11/5/13: Justine has gained 12 pounds since she's been with us, and she looks lovely. She is very mellow and even-tempered. She likes to go for walks, but then will happily curl up on her blanket again.

Staff Update 12/9/13: Justine went to the Winter Festival at a horse ranch this weekend. She was fascinated by the horses, and just stood and watched them, tail wagging. She was a little uncertain of Santa Claus, but was able to get a picture with him. One very strange thing we learned is that Justine hates cowboy hats. A man wearing one approached her, and Justine's handler had to strain to hold her back. The man took the hat off, and suddenly, Justine was her old affectionate self. We don't think it's all hats, because we've had her around people with baseball caps and she had no reaction. I guess if she comes home with you, just don't wear a cowboy hat around her.
