Bagel is a sweet Lab puppy. We rescued her from a kill shelter when the administrator, Mary Beth called and asked Judy to come get her and her friend, Banjo. Mary Beth knew it was unlikely they would get adopted in the limited amount of time that she had for them because they have mange. Now, if you aren't familiar with mange, allow me the opportunity to educate you a bit. There are two types of mange ~ one is contageous, the other is not. These two have the latter, the non-contageous type. It is just a condition that is cleared up with a 30 day treatment of ivermectin, the active ingrediant in heartworm preventive.
Judy came by my house on the way home from the shelter so I could take pictures of Bagel and Banjo. You should have seen this poor little girl. She was scared to death. Whereas Banjo just bounded out of the van to pose for the camera, Bagel huddled back in her crate with these big eyes just looking at me. Judy said, "Let's not upset her anymore than she is. Just take a couple of photos of her where she is." And that is what I did. So perhaps her photos aren't as nice as I'd like, but Bagel had already had a hard day. I mean, how scarey must it be for a dog to be in a kill shelter?
She probably won't be ready for her new home until mid-July. In the meanwhile, we would love to get her into a foster home, preferably one with a fenced in yard where she can romp to her heart's content. If you are interested in fostering, please complete a foster application. And if you would like to help offset her expenses for us, please complete a sponsor form. Thank you all!

7/01 Update: Bagel is in a foster home, has been spayed, her skin condition has cleared up and she is anxious to find her forever home!

*** How familiar are you with the Labrador Retriever? According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
