Description:

Mary and her siblings spent the first month of their lives in a little room with almost no human contact. We are now giving them all the experiences puppies should have: fresh air, sunshine, playtime in the grass, and lots of love! The other siblings look like Great Pyrenees, which the mama is, so we're assuming Mary and Brantley must look like the father.

Foster Update 9/19:

Energy level: Mary has a moderate energy level.  She is up for a daily walk, runs around fetching balls, and rests when there is nothing going on.

Leash manners: When we first began walking Mary, she did not seem to know how to walk with a leash.  She responds best with a harness and takes a minute to warm up but is then able to keep up with us on our daily walks.

Food: We are presently feeding her dry grain free food because our other dog eats it.  We leave the food out throughout the day and she receives healthy snacks two to three times a day.

Adaptability: Mary is very adaptable to all situations that we have placed her in: car rides, walks, dog park, play pen, crate, back yard, meeting different people including children and adults, and meeting different dogs.

Behaviors: Because Mary is a puppy, she does enjoy chewing - but we always provide chew toys and we do not allow her to wander freely in the house where we cannot see her, so she has not damaged anything.

Human Social Skills: Mary is very friendly with all the individuals she has met while she has been with us.

Animal Social Skills: Mary is very social with our dog, the dogs at the dog park, and the other dogs we have walked with.  She allows other dogs to smell her and does not get defensive or agitated but just stands there and allows them to get to know her.  We have not seen Mary show fear or anger.  She also does not seem to be territorial.

Obedience training: We are in the process of teaching her to 'come', 'sit', 'shake' and 'down'.

Training: As of now, Mary stays in a play pen or crate when no one is home.  She has not had any accidents and when we let her go out back, she goes through the doggy door and uses the bathroom in the grassy area.  Mary also uses the bathroom during our walks outside.  When we are home, she sometimes 'whines' while in her play pen which appears that she is warning us that she needs to use the bathroom because when she is taken outside, she goes right to the bathroom.

Personality Quirks: Mary is a fun and loving dog who wants to please others and wants to be loved.

Ideal Home: Mary seems as if she will adapt to any home that will offer her attention and love.  She does well with children, adults and other dogs.  We do not have a cat - so cannot say how she would react with cats.

General Information about Hound Dogs
All of the dogs listed below belong to the collection of dogs referred to as Hound Dogs. As implied by its name Hound Dogs have been bred to chase (or hound) a quarry by sight or smell, or a combination of both senses. Sighthounds have exceptional eyesight, combined with the speed and stamina necessary to catch the intended prey once seen, typical examples being the Greyhound and the Whippet. Hounds which rely strongly on the sense of smell to follow the trail of a prey, such as the Bloodhound, quite literally follow their noses, speed and eyesight is of less importance.

Characteristics and features have been introduced and strengthened by breeding from animals who already demonstrated the desired traits. Breeding for appearance was only introduced in the 19th Century. Before this time dogs and puppies were bred to increase useful abilities and traits helpful for the duties they were intended for. Thus, the various hound breeds were initially introduced to help man according to specific requirements such as hunting and running, flushing out and driving game, vermin hunting, guard duties and tracking.

In this day and age only a few hounds still undertake these tasks, but nevertheless, they still harbour the skills and characteristics that made the original Whippet dog breeding program successful. The Hound Breed Group of dogs differ in that some hunt by scent and others by sight. Many hounds are kept in packs, in outdoor kennels. Any dogs and puppies belonging to the Hound breeds require a significant amount of exercise as they have high stamina levels suitable for hunting quarry. There are some breeds in this group who make a distinctive ' baying ' sound - invaluable information should be considering puppies.
