Shelby was rescued from a high kill shelter. She was turned in with an old leg wound. After being examine by a vet and x-rays were taken it was discovered that Shelby had her leg broken some time ago and her leg was never set correctly. At this point there is nothing that can be done short of rebreaking her leg. She is a energenic happy lab whom has no problems getting around and playing. She is pretty high energy so we could recommend she go a home were she can have a yard to play in and someone whom has plenty of time to excerise here!

Here is what Shelby's foster family has to say about her:

• Appearance Shelby looks like a Chocolate lab but has a white patch on her chest and some white toes.  She also has the liver colored eyes of a chocolate lab.  She is small, around 50 pounds

• Energy Level She is high energy.  She is good inside the house, doesn't run.  But she loves running around the backyard chasing my 4 year old lab

• Food She eats 1 1/2 cups of Purina Dog Chow twice a day.  At around 6am and then at 5pm

• Adaptability She adapts well.  The first day she got home she was very comfortable with her new surroundings and with my dogs.

• Behaviors She is only 2 and does have puppy habits like chewing.  We leave tennis balls, soup bones and kongs around the house but she sometimes will find something else to chew.

• Human Social Skills She is very friendly and wants to meet and greet everyone she sees

• Animal Social Skills She loves all dogs and plays wonderfully with my 4 year old lab.  She is very respectful of my 12 year old lab

• Obedience She knows sit, stay and come

• Training She is housetrained, but we crate her during the day because of her chewing.  She sleeps outside the crate at night and is fine

• Personality Quirks She is super smart and very observant.  She always wants to know what you are doing.

• Ideal Home She would love to be in a home with an active family.  Someone who could take her for long walks or runs everyday.  She would be great in a home with another dog.  Not sure about cats since we don't own one

*** According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
