Scarlett is a beautiful Red hound/Shepherd who has so much love...this sweet puppy is looking for an amazing home after being rescued from the side of the road by a caring dog rescuer.
- Leash Manners - She can be good but does pull a lot. She is taking me for a walk most of the time. She has a collar that has a choke feature where if she pulls, it tightens. Definitely still learning.
- Crate/House Training - She is both crate and house trained. She has not had any accidents in the house and does not cry when in the crate.
- Socialization - As far as I can tell she is fine with everyone. She does "mouth" when playing so whomever adopts her should be mindful of this for little kids who may try to play with her. She is a puppy after all. She loves other dogs. She has not been exposed to people of a race that is not white, nor has she been around cats.
- Energy Level and Exercise - She gets to go out about 6 walks a day on average. A couple of times this week she was taken on a long run/trip to the park. She did well. She really loves to play but more than anything loves to have her belly rubbed. We play fetch (tennis ball) with her and she is good about bringing the ball back.
- Daily Structure and Schedule - Wake up at 7, eat, go out 2-3 times before lunch. Play some. She naps. Go on some more walks. Eat at 7 pm. Go on some more walks and play. Bed at 10:30/11.
- Temperament - She is timid at first. She took about 3 days to warm up to the apartment. She is pretty submissive but definitely likes to do her own thing. She responds well to "No".
- Obedience Training - She is learning Sit now. She is still learning her name. Overall, not much except for "No".
- Behaviors - Chewing, such as taking socks or shoes. Jumping up (but this is not a big issue). Pulling on the leash.
- Personality Quirks - She is incredibly sweet. She definitely processes the situation. She is a very independent dog but LOVES to be loved on. She is a fantastic bath receiver. She really likes the water to be hot and will just sit there while you bathe her. She won't even shake until her head gets wet. She loves the bath also because it requires you to rub her belly and butt.
- Ideal Home - She needs people who are going to pay attention to her. She really loves to play with her toys. She doesn't need constant attention (I have no problem letting her wander my apartment, but she does get restless at times and will need to be played with or go on a walk. Not good for the type of people who want a lazy dog...she can be, but not always.
General Information about Hound Dogs
All of the dogs listed below belong to the collection of dogs referred to as Hound Dogs. As implied by its name Hound Dogs have been bred to chase (or hound) a quarry by sight or smell, or a combination of both senses. Sighthounds have exceptional eyesight, combined with the speed and stamina necessary to catch the intended prey once seen, typical examples being the Greyhound and the Whippet. Hounds which rely strongly on the sense of smell to follow the trail of a prey, such as the Bloodhound, quite literally follow their noses, speed and eyesight is of less importance.
Characteristics and features have been introduced and strengthened by breeding from animals who already demonstrated the desired traits. Breeding for appearance was only introduced in the 19th Century. Before this time dogs and puppies were bred to increase useful abilities and traits helpful for the duties they were intended for. Thus, the various hound breeds were initially introduced to help man according to specific requirements such as hunting and running, flushing out and driving game, vermin hunting, guard duties and tracking.
In this day and age only a few hounds still undertake these tasks, but nevertheless, they still harbour the skills and characteristics that made the original Whippet dog breeding program successful. The Hound Breed Group of dogs differ in that some hunt by scent and others by sight. Many hounds are kept in packs, in outdoor kennels. Any dogs and puppies belonging to the Hound breeds require a significant amount of exercise as they have high stamina levels suitable for hunting quarry. There are some breeds in this group who make a distinctive ' baying ' sound - invaluable information should be considering puppies.
