Description: Davy Crocket was rescued along with 22 other dogs from a hoarding/neglect situation. This beautiful Lab puppy is so happy and outgoing, I know he would make a great family dog!
Davy's recent exam indicated that he is currently positive for Puppy Mange (demodex mange). Davy is currently being treated for this and when adopted we will provide oral medication to help with this treatment.
Leash Manners - Walks well on leash.
Crate/House Training - House trained - no accidents. Davy likes the crate and will go in it on his own. I put him in the crate to feed him, treat him, for a nap and at night.
Socialization – He enjoys running in the yard with my dogs and enjoys playing with a 4 month old puppy we're fostering. He enjoys tossing toys around and being near my dogs inside. He is friendly with people and loves being petted.
Energy Level and Exercise – Moderate energy – enjoys the freedom of the yard and motivates my dogs to chase and play with him. He plays outside several times throughout the day and goes for a 20 minute walk. He enjoys playing fetch and brings it back most of the time. He is calm inside.
Daily Structure and Schedule – Walks 20 minutes in the morning, plays a little and then has 1 cup of food. He plays in the sandbox or yard, naps for 2 -3 hours in the crate, has 3/4 cup of food or some treats in the afternoon and plays in the yard or enjoys being near me inside. He has 1 cup of food around 6 PM and then plays in the yard, goes for a walk or to the dog park. He sleeps 9 - 10 hours at night.
Confidence Level – Friendly and confident with people and other dogs. Don't think he's been in a car much. I have to pick him up and put him in it but he seems to enjoy the ride. This should improve after a couple of trips to the dog park.
Obedience Training – He has learned "sit" and we're working on "come" and “wait” at the door. He makes good eye contact and seems to want to please, so he should be easy to train.
Behaviors – Takes treats gently but is too curious like most puppy's about what the other dog has so I feed and treat him in his crate. He is respectful to large dogs inside and enjoys laying on a dog bed with a puppy and mouth wrestling. He enjoys being around the dogs in the yard and chases, plays fetch and wrestles with the puppy until he is exhausted. Inside he walks up to see what I'm doing often and enjoys lying near me.
Personality Quirks – Quickly recovering from his puppy mange. The fur on his face and legs is coming in nicely and his coat is thick and shiny.
Ideal Home - Would love an active home with a single person, a couple or a family (still teething but plays calmly inside) . He would enjoy a fenced yard and someone who would enjoy walking and playing with him. He would enjoy another dog in the home but seems to want my attention so I think he will be happy being an only dog if his owner enjoys spending time with him. He is playful and gentle and will bond quickly to a caring person who has time for him. He will make a loyal companion or a great family pet.
*** According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
