Description: Little Eli was surrendered by his previous owner because of a divorce. Eli is the sweetest little fluff ball with the best little personality! He's calm but playful, sweet and loving. Do you have room in your heart for Eli?
Leash Manners - Walks on leash – zig/zags constantly but doesn't pull; may not have been on a leash before.
Crate/House Training – Eli didn’t like going in the crate but once in remained quiet and entertained himself until he needed to go outside to potty. He appears to be house broken as he had no accidents. He did wake me up in the middle of the night to go outside once. Quiet when in the crate and riding in the car.
Socialization - Good with white people of all ages. He obviously was cared for by a woman as he follows the women in the house around everywhere. He was excellent with 2 yr. old and 11 yr. old girl. Allowed the men in the house to pick him up but deserted them whenever a woman was in the room. Not around any other races. Prefers female to males.
Energy Level and Exercise – Moderate energy level since he is such a small dog.
Daily Structure and Schedule - Ran through all rooms in the house 3 times at lightning speed in the morning and once breathing heavily, he stopped and rested. Proceeded to do the same in the afternoon and again in the evening. In the interim, he played fetch, chased a ball around the room, chased the cats around the house and ran outside for 5-10 minutes every 3 hours when he went out to potty. Took a 20 minute walk after dinner; walked most the way before tiring. He goes outside between 8 & 9 AM to start the day Potty times every 3 hours. He goes outside willingly whenever asked “Lets go outside”. He immediately wets and then within a minute he circles the yard and “poops”. Once done, he heads back to the front door. Fed him 1/3 C morning, 2 PM and 6 PM, Food was provided by you. Treats given after “potty” breaks. Bed time between 10 and 11 PM. Crate provided for his bed and left open on enclosed 10 x 23’ porch whenever no one was home and at night.
Temperament – I believe he is an alpha dog. He has no fear! He chased the cats but backed off when hissed at; 10 seconds later he chased them again but backed off. He thinks big dogs are a conquest but backs off when growled at; 10 seconds later tried again with same result. He isn’t a quitter. He seems to think everything/one is his friend or will be won over in a short period of time.
Obedience Training - Eli knows Sit, No, and comes when his name is called. We were working on eating on the tile not the carpet, staying in specific rooms on command. Very bright puppy. Behaviors - He does jump at your face and mouths when playing. Scratching on french doors to be in same room as others. Aggressive when given a treat that smells good; but did not bite when trying to retrieve the treat from him. Does not let you know when he needs to go out – but goes out willing when asked. Eli wants to be under a woman’s foot at all times; thus, he could trip young or old. He is so fast and tiny he is able to slip out the door as soon as it is opened. He loves the yard and walks; he doesn’t mind getting dirty or wet from the grass.
Personality Quirks - Eli wants constant interaction. Loves to play ball alone or with someone. Allows you to lay him on his back, mess with his ears, feet, nails. Barks very little.
Ideal Home - He would do well in a large apartment since he rarely barks and is so small. He seems like he would be a great fit for a family that had an elderly person he could sit with in his down time; but didn’t mind being played with by young children either – of course they were all females. He appears very adaptable to me and would be happy in a home or apartment that gives him freedom to run. I think he will be a pretty independent fellow with a great personality.
Are you unfamiliar with the Shih Tzu breed? Pronounced SHEET-sue, they are known as alert, spunky, happy and hardy. They are bred with an underbite which gives them a constant "smile." Traditionally, their coat is kept long, with ears blending into the body, distinct mustache, and a top knot secured with a bow. However, in our Florida climate, many are clipped short to relieve them of the heat. An alert watch dog, Shih Tzus like to bark but are usually quiet in the house. Originally from China, they were a favorite of the Imperial Chinese court and so revered that for many years after the Chinese began trading with the West, they refused to sell, or even give away, any of the little dogs. It was not until 1930 that the first pair was imported to England. The life expectancy of Shih Tzus in 16 years.
