Description:

Shelly was found wandering out in the middle of nowhere on a dirt road. This sweet little dog is just too precious to be abandoned. She's a little older but is all wags and love! We know we can find a GREAT home for her!

Shelly qualifies for our senior for Senior program. If adopted by a senior person (55+) her adoption fee is $75.

  • Crate/House Training   She is housetrained and though we did crate her the first few times we left, we have not done so since.  She does fine.
  • Socialization  - Good with people, dogs, cats
  • Energy Level and Exercise  - Low energy.  She gets silly a few times a day and wants to roll around and have you rub her belly and play with her one on one.   She normally just wanders around the yard but she can really move if she sees a squirrel - and at meal time!
  • Daily Structure and Schedule  - She eats twice a day.   I give her a joint supplement (1/4 of one each meal) and she eats Royal Canin Mini Mature dry and Science Diet Mature Adult.   She loves meal time!
  • Confidence Level  - She is submissive with our other dogs at times.    She just fit right in with 5 of them of all sizes.    If she is up and moving, her tail is wagging!
  • Behaviors  - She is well behaved, loves to cuddle and be held and she likes to tunnel under blankets or towels which is very funny.
  • Ideal Home  - She is older and due to having such a long back, I think any possible home should be limited to older children only that can understand how to pick her up and hold her properly.      She would love a home where she can be on a lap or laps!

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Dachshund (pronounced dak sund) originated in Germany many hundreds of years ago. "Dachs" is the word for badger. The Dachshund was bred to hunt and follow these animals to earth, gradually becoming highly evolved, with shortened legs to dig the prey out and go down inside the burrows. Smaller Dachshunds where bred to hunt hare and stoat. Dachshunds have many "terrier" characteristics. They are versatile and courageous dogs and have been known to take on foxes and otters, besides badgers. Lively and affectionate; proud and bold, almost rash. Tenacious. Can be willful and clownish. Curious and mischievous, they are very clever and may attempt to train the owner rather than allow the opposite. Devoted to his family, some fanciers feel the long-haired variety is calmer than the other two types. The wire-haired variety is more outgoing and clown-like. All are slightly difficult to train. Dachshunds are good dogs to travel with. They are best with older, considerate children and are moderately protective. These little dogs like to bark (their barks are surprisingly loud for their size) and are compulsive diggers. They are generally okay with other pets, however, they can be jealous, irritable, obstinate and very quick to bite. Sometimes they will refuse to be handled. They should not be over fed, for this breed tends to gain weight quickly. They have a life expectancy of 12-15 years.
