Description:Rex was rescued from a high kill shelter. This sweet min pin is so cute, but he is a little shy when first meeting people. I'm sure he will find a great furever home!
Foster Update 8/11/15:
they are bonded & cannot be separated
•
Appearance
tiny not sure of their weigh I would say under 15 pounds THEY DID gain some weight when they got settled in with me, of course they get cheese, peanut butter & I cook for them. They LOVE sweet potato, mashed carrots mashed, & will even eat broccoli if it has salad dressing on it! I buy them beef "soup" bones & boil them with their food for flavor (mix veggies & brown rice) they love the beef bone will keep them occupied for at least half hour.
•
Energy Level
LOW - they do not play they love being outside sniffing & seeing the birds & squirrels, love car rides & do well on the leash
•
Food
dry food & I cook chicken & mixed veggies for them, they also get home made dog biscuits (peanut butter spinach carrots banana)
•
Adaptability
they are pretty set in their ways, when I first got them they were so skittish & scared, they do not like children, I think they are just scared of them since they had not been around them I have a 6 yr old nephew they will let him pet them but my nephew wants to play & Rex & Snake do not play they will HAVE to be placed with a homebody with no children.
•
Behaviors
No bad habits, they will whine if I leave them, I had my neighbor "time" them & she said it was about half an hour, they are not used to being left at home.
•
Human Social Skills
they are cautious with new people, they will look & sniff, then they are ok a friend came by the other day & they just jumped up in her lap ! that was a surprise, it was someone about my same age, They have no difference with nationality or skin color (I am white my two friends Spanish & black) I know that may sound weird to say that but there are dogs scared of a skin color because they have a bad experience in the past )
• Animal Social Skills No problem with dogs my friends dog stayed with us for about 3 weeks & everyone go along well. Rex & snake ate on one side of the kitchen & the visitor dog ate on the other no growling no food issues, but they were separate & I stayed in the kitchen with them. REX SLEPT BESIDE ME ON THE BED & VISITOR SLEPT AT FOOT OF BED.
•
Obedience
STAY WHILE I TAKE THE GARBAGE OUT, LET;S GO FOR A CAR RIDE, COME LET ME PUT YOUR LEASH ON **they are not still very wiggly & excited to go for a car ride** they look like wild things! I put them in a crate in the car for safety, they are too small & am scared they will get underfoot, I have let them sit in the passenger seat for a short drive to the store but never on any long trip.
•
Training
They are potty trained, they sleep in their crate, at first I closed the crate at night now I just leave the door ajar, I do not mind a dog sleeping with me SNAKE stays in the crate all night & comes out in the am. REX sometimes not always comes & gets in bed with me. The crate is in my bedroom I do put them in the crate if I have to leave them at the house (which is rare I am not working right now) I put the crate in the living room & leave the PBS channel on for the dogs & my birds. Everyone is in their cages
• Personality Quirks It is sad that they do no know how to play, I have worked with them on that they are just not interested. They will enjoy chewing on a beef bone, they will sometimes run in the hosue & play on the bed with me, they do not run & play in the yard they just have fun being outside, lay in the sun, chase squirrels (a fenced yard) ****THEY WILL NEED A FENCED YARD OR ALWAYS BE ON A LEASH I have taken them for walks they do fine, they have gone to the nature park & love that!
•
Ideal Home
THey really should be placed in an adult home. They will tolerate kids but children are too rough for these little boys. They will tolerate my 6 yr old nephew but he knows they do not play & he just sits on the floor & rubs them... but he is a kid that listens SO NOT FOR A HOME WITH CHILDREN ==== Need someone who either works part time or not at all . DEFFINATLY ADULT HOME ONLY they will tolerate another dog just depends on the other dog I have never seen them growl or get upset at another dog, just a little shy.
The boys do not bark when meeting new people or new animals , they used to bark when the mailman came or the neighbor drove into the driveway now they are fine & do not bark ,. they only bark if a STRANGER comes to the door.
They are TERRIFIED of thunder storms. they usually are on my lap when thundering & of course fireworks I had to stay in the hosue watch fireworks on TV & also will not go out to pee in the rain unless I put them on a leash.
Foster Update 5/2015:
Rex and his buddy, Snake, are really sweet dogs. They figured out the dog door, how to use the doggy stairs to get on the bed, and how to get on and off the sofa within an hour of entering my home. They transitioned easily into my home of three super large dogs. Although they are very bonded with each other, they could be adopted separately if new owners have another dog. They have ok leash skills, but I can tell they were mostly exercised in a yard. They freeze on the leash frequently. They are extremely loving dogs that would be great companions for someone looking for a real friend or two!
According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Miniature Pinscher is not related to the Doberman Pinscher, and is in fact an older breed than the Doberman. Developed in Germany from terrier breeds, including the German Pinscher, the Miniature Pinscher's original use was in hunting rats to keep the population down in the stables that it frequented. Italian Greyhound blood may have been added to produce such a tiny, high stepping-dog. The word "Pinscher" means "terrier" in German. Today the MinPin's high spirit and bright personality make him a charming companion. Some of the Miniature Pinscher's talents are competitive obedience, watchdogging, and agility. The Miniature Pinscher is a hardy little fellow that is very demanding and headstrong. This proud, overly courageous dog likes to bark. They are loyal to their masters, spirited and alert, with high energy. Intelligent, lively and brave, it is a big dog in a little dog's body. The Miniature Pinscher is moderately protective. Some can be very aggressive with other dogs, but they are generally good with other pets and children provided the children do not pester. They are rather suspicious towards strangers, but their behavior depends entirely upon how they were brought up as young pups. Don't spoil this breed too much or the dog may become a tyrant. The Miniature Pinscher can learn extremely well and wants very much to do so. It is certainly beneficial for its socialization to take the dog to puppy courses where it can meet other dogs and people. You will be amazed at how fast the Miniature Pinscher understands and obeys you. Pay particular attention when housebreaking this little Pinscher, since a little puddle from such a small dog can easily be overlooked; the dog may get the idea that you are happy to accept it fulfilling its natural needs indoors. The Miniature Pinscher is often called "King Of The Toys." Beware, this little dog will chew small objects and may choke on them. Do not overfeed this breed. They are a remarkably healthy breed and have an expected life span of 15 or more years.
