Description:

These sweet Hound mixes are looking for a home after being dumped in a rural area in very poor condition. They were found and transported to a high kill shelter, where we rescued them for some much needed TLC and to find their furever homes!

  • Leash Manners:  Freezes on the leash repeatedly.  We will keep working on this "skill".
  • Crate/House Training:  Bobby has not learned the doggy door yet.  He has had a few accidents in the house.  He also goes potty in the yard when I take him out frequently.
  • Socialization:  Bobby is timid when first encountering new animals.  He started barking, growling and attempting to snap at my dog and cat when he first met them.  We have been persistent with "no" for bad behaviors and training treats for good behavior.  He is making progress.  I can offer both him and my own dog treats side by side in the kitchen, and Bobby waits patiently for his own treat.  Since he had an opportunity to sniff all over the cat and give her a few licks, Bobby is not as antagonized by the cat.  The cat and Bobby slept with me last night, and this morning on awakening, Bobby walked over to the cat wagging his tail.
  • Energy Level and Exercise: Bobby is moderate energy level.  He does not play with toys much at all.  I have found that he likes to play Peek-a-Boo and tug a war with soft fuzzy blankets.  He had fun yesterday playing with himself in the azalea bushes outside, rolling, tugging at leaves and blooms.  He does not pay much attention to rubber chew toys or balls.  Bobby does like to play with small stuffed animal dog toys.  He goes immediately to the dog beds I have in the family room.
  • Daily Structure and Schedule:  Bobby is free to roam in the home with her foster siblings, Jakey the dog and Charley the cat.  He gets Evangers dog food twice a day + 2 treats in the morning and evening.  Happy hips chicken jerky, happy heart chicken jerky or sweet potatoe treat.  He doesn't care for the sweet potatoe very much.  I'm also using the tiny beef training treats to encourage him to walk on the leash and come when called.
  • Temperament Obedience Training:  Bobby Jo is very timid and needs much encouragement.  He loves to be held and petted which reassures him.  I have taught him to "Sit" for a treat.  He knows the word "No".
  • Behaviors:  So far, he's quiet unless startled by a new animal or person.  He has shown no aggressive behavior to my visitors.  I don't have any small children around, only adults and teenagers.  I can handle his face, head, etc. even when he is eating.
  • Personality Quirks:  Bobby Jo likes to sleep and cuddle with his human.  He went to bed last night in the doggy bed.  When I got up for some water at 2:30 am, he followed me the kitchen.  I put him in the bed with me at that time, and he almost danced for joy.  Bobby Jo was rolling around, kissing me, pulling the blanket over him and making happy sounds for about 3-5 min. before snuggling next to my side and falling asleep.  He is one of those pups that likes to burrow under the covers and make himself a "den".
  • Ideal Home - I'm not sure what would be the ideal home yet, other than to say at this point, Bobby is a puppy in training with a few minor issues to work through and could do well with a family that appreciates his learning needs and is patient with him.  He will need to be introduced carefully and in a non-threatening way to animals he does not know, otherwise he will snap/bite at the other animal and act aggressive.  Feeding should be supervised until he is comfortable with other animals in the house.

General Information about Hound Dogs
All of the dogs listed below belong to the collection of dogs referred to as Hound Dogs. As implied by its name Hound Dogs have been bred to chase (or hound) a quarry by sight or smell, or a combination of both senses. Sighthounds have exceptional eyesight, combined with the speed and stamina necessary to catch the intended prey once seen, typical examples being the Greyhound and the Whippet. Hounds which rely strongly on the sense of smell to follow the trail of a prey, such as the Bloodhound, quite literally follow their noses, speed and eyesight is of less importance.

Characteristics and features have been introduced and strengthened by breeding from animals who already demonstrated the desired traits. Breeding for appearance was only introduced in the 19th Century. Before this time dogs and puppies were bred to increase useful abilities and traits helpful for the duties they were intended for. Thus, the various hound breeds were initially introduced to help man according to specific requirements such as hunting and running, flushing out and driving game, vermin hunting, guard duties and tracking.

In this day and age only a few hounds still undertake these tasks, but nevertheless, they still harbour the skills and characteristics that made the original Whippet dog breeding program successful. The Hound Breed Group of dogs differ in that some hunt by scent and others by sight. Many hounds are kept in packs, in outdoor kennels. Any dogs and puppies belonging to the Hound breeds require a significant amount of exercise as they have high stamina levels suitable for hunting quarry. There are some breeds in this group who make a distinctive ' baying ' sound - invaluable information should be considering puppies.
