Description:

Stripey was found nervously running around a west Orlando neighborhood.  He was one of 3 dogs apparently 'dumped off' and abandoned.  After his rescue, it didn't take long for him to show affection.  He had been very hungry, thirsty, and scared.  Here is what his rescuer and foster family has to say about him:

  • Leash Manners - He walks well on leash when walked properly using a prong collar.  Even if other dogs bark at him while out on walks, he remains calm.
  • Crate/House Training - He is 100% house trained and crate trained.  He will whine if crated when he can still see you but does not bark or have any separation anxiety issues.
  • Socialization - He is great with other dogs, including small dogs, and people of all ages, including children.  He gets along with my Chihuahua and my 10 year old Lab/Chow mix and is submissive to them both.  He has had three play dates with two of my neighbor's dogs without any issues.
  • Energy Level and Exercise - Although he is young, he is surprisingly calm and is not a hyper dog whatsoever.  However, he does LOVE to take walks and really enjoys time to run freely at the dog park and play with other dogs.  He has an excellent disposition.
  • Daily Structure and Schedule - He eats 1 cup of dry food twice daily and goes on long daily walks, sometimes by himself and sometimes with the other two dogs.
  • Confidence Level - Stripey is submissive to other dogs but can be stubborn sometimes if he doesn't want to do something.  Still, he is eager to please and learn and seems very intelligent.
  • Obedience Training - He knows Sit and Lay and is learning Off, Wait and Stay.  Since the night we rescued him, he has let us pet him when eating, take things out of his mouth and give him baths outside with the hose without any problems.
  • Behaviors - Stripey does not always know his own strength, but this is not uncommon with most dogs his size.  He needs to be with someone comfortable with his strength.
  • Personality Quirks - Stripey is adorable whenever he sees someone swimming in a pool - he tilts his head in amazement if you swim underwater!  He is so curious and really wants to get in the pool, but hesitates. He has clumsily fallen in a couple of times and needed to be helped out.
  • Ideal Home - Ideally, he would be happiest in a home with other dogs and children to play with.  He will make someone an amazing companion because he is so eager to give and receive love and attention!

The Terrier is a good-natured, amusing, extremely loyal and affectionate family pet, which is good with children and adults. Almost always obedient, it is always eager to please its master. It is an extremely courageous and intelligent guard dog that is very full of vitality. They are highly protective of their owners and the owner's property. It is usually very friendly, but has an uncanny ability to know when it needs to protect and when everything is okay. Excellent with children in the family, they have a high pain tolerance and will happily put up with rough child play. As with any breed, they should not be left alone with unfamiliar children. Used as all around working farm dogs, they were referred to as "the poor mans horse". They are strong and generally weigh between 40 and 70 lbs. They have a life expectancy of about 12 - 14 years.
