This sweet mamma dog was rescued from a high kill shelter after she was surrendered very pregant. We only know that she is a 2 yrs. old, Springer/ Mountain dog mix that was bred with a Border Collie. She is great with kids and loves people. She has been a great mama to her puppies.
Foster Update: Candy is as sweet as her name. She is such an amazing dog. She hasn't had any formal training, but she is one of those dogs that is just naturally really well behaved. She is so mellow and is content to just hang out and sleep most of the time, but she is playful if you engage her. She is definitely a low to medium energy dog. She is very patient and gentle and would be the perfect family dog. She absolutely loves kids and is so good with them. She gets along great with my two dogs and does well at the dog park too. She doesn't show any signs of food or toy aggression with people or other dogs. Really her only fault is that she does tend to pull on a leash, but we are working hard to fix that and she is definitely improving. She does walk a lot better using an easy walk harness. Other than that she is pretty darn perfect! She's such a snuggler and a joy to have around.
Like many dogs in the South, Candy is heartworm positive, but don't let that stop you from adopting a great dog. We are treating him with monthly heartworm preventative, our preferred method. Many heartworm positive dogs go on to lead long and healthy lives.
PRBJtreats ALL of our dogs with monthly Heartworm preventative. Heartworms are transmitted to dogs via mosquitoes. Humans do not contract heartworms. Heartworm positive (HW+ ) dogs are treated with the recommended slow kill method, using monthly HW preventative as it is gentler on the animal’s system than the more invasive injection method. Most dogs that are Heartworm positive can lead healthy, normal lives if the worms are caught early and treatment began. There are different options to treat HW and new owners may choose to redirect their type of treatment with direction of their vet.All HW+ dogs have a HW slow treatment info sheet in their adoption folder which will be provided to new owners.
According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, this is the founder of all the English hunting spaniels. During the Renaissance, it was considered the ideal companion for the European hunter. Its popularity in America began in 1700. The Springer Spaniel gets its name from his method of flushing game: he springs forward to drive birds out of hiding. This breed hunts well both on land and water and is good at work in brush. He also is a fine retriever. The English Springer Spaniel's merry, gentle personality makes him an ideal family dog. His talents are hunting, tracking, retrieving, watchdogging, agility, competitive obedience, and performing tricks. Most English Springers are even-tempered, gentle, friendly, and sociable dogs that are great for kids. Intelligent, skillful, willing and obedient. Playful, energetic and a quick leaner. Merry, brave and sweet tail-waggers. Cheerful and courageous. It is affectionate, good natured and sincere, this dog loves everyone. Springers do best when they are with people as much as possible. They can get into trouble if left alone too long. They love water and may constantly get themselves wet and muddy. Usually they are good with other pets with the possible exception of birds. Sometimes argumentative with same sex dogs. This breed can be destructive and bark a lot if left alone. Springers need wise guidance through what is called their "teenage" time. Some are high-energy and they are all intelligent. They need a soft, but firm hand so they always know who is in control. There are two types of Springers - field and bench. The field type are bred for hunting and field trial work. They tend to have more white coat than the bench type, much less hair, and are more high energy. The bench type are bred for conformation shows and have more liver or black than white, they have much more coat, but are usually calmer. They have a life expectancy of 12-14 years.
