Lindy came to us from Animal Control. She is extremely sweet and within five minutes of being let out of her crate, she was sitting on a volunteer's lap and purring up a storm.
No one is really sure where or when the Maine Coon breed originated. One popular tale is that a cat bred with a raccoon, but of course, that is scientifically impossible! The winner of the very first cat show in the US, in 1895, was a Maine Coon named Cosey. The breed almost went extinct by the mid-20th century, but the efforts of their fans brought them back. Today, they are the second most popular breed in the US. The Maine Coon is one of the largest domestic cats. Mature males can weigh up to 25 pounds, and measure 40 inches from nose to tail. They have a thick, dense coat suitable for surviving the New England winters--although of course today, the best place for a pet cat is indoors! Highly intelligent, these "gentle giants" of the cat world are loyal to their family but reserved (though not mean) around strangers. Their relaxed disposition means they generally do well around other cats and dogs. Some Maine Coons will play in the water. They are also talkers, but not to the extend that Siamese and its relatives are.
