Description: Bartow is very loving hound mix. We think he is around 4 years old. When he first arrived he was a bit timid with people (since my dog jumps all over people when he meets them, licking and head butting, I think "timid" is a positive trait!) but he has relaxed now and is very loving. Bartow is playful and gets along great with other dogs as well. Like many abandoned Florida dogs, he wass heartwom positive, for which we treated him. Heartworms are caused by mosquito bites ~ please, if you have a dog, keep them on heartworm preventive!!!! Whoever had Bartow before, didn't love him enough to do this. We know that the family that adopts him will give him that much love and more!!! 4/8 Foster Update: "Oh Mr. Bartow is such a sweet, sweet boy!
This guy just wants a nice calm and loving home where he can feel safe and adored. Oh and how he deserves it too!
Around the house: Bartow is wonderful and just wants a nice cozy bed to curl up in. He does not chew or mark around the house, but watch out for any food on the counter or in the trashcans! All that yummy smelling food is oh so tempting to a hound nose, especially for a hound who has had to scavenge for food in his past. He sleeps on his bed at night and is crated when I am not home with him. A crate provides him with a nice safe place. Crates are like a dog’s own room and make them feel secure as well as keep them out of trouble!
People/Families: Bartow has a bit of a fear of men. He gives men a questioning look as they approach, but once given a loving pet and a treat or two he can easily be won over! I would recommend that Bartow not go to a home with young children. Loud sounds and sudden movements can be quite frightening to him and he still needs time to learn that no one is going to hurt him.
Cats: Bartow is a gentleman with cats and has never even taken a quick step towards my cat. He may have taken some quick and sneaky steps towards the cat food though!
Dogs: Again, Bartow is wonderful with other dogs and greets new friends with a tail wag and a friendly sniff.
Leash: Bartow is a good boy on the leash. He is a bit sensitive to the heat so early morning and evening walks are his favorite. He is not extremely active so he just needs a couple of nice calm walks everyday!
Car: Bartow is perfect in the car and loves his little field trips around town!
Hmmm… what else? Well all I can say is that he is a loving and loyal boy who is patiently waiting for a family to call his own for the rest of his life. He was heartworm positive when we rescued him, but he has already gone through treatment and is now in the recovery and healthy weight gain process!
I adore this little man! Let’s find his forever home!!"
According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Treeing Walker is a descendant of the English Foxhound, which Thomas Walker imported to Virginia in 1742. Sometime in the 1800's, a dog known as "Tennessee Lead," a stolen dog of unknown origin, was crossed into the Walker Hound. He was a powerful dog, excelling in game sense, drive and speed, and having a clear, short-chop mouth. The Treeing Walker was not recognized as its own breed until 1946. This direct lineage brings us this efficient hunter. This coonhound has retained the looks of its ancestors, the English Foxhound. An underlying sense of game coupled with untiring speed and manly drive makes this coonhound unstoppable. The coonhound lineage doesn't really stop at the Walker, for
