Description:

Alice came from a high kill shelter. She came in with a broken leg that is now healed. She is very sweet and looking for her forever home.

Foster Update:  Alice is adorable, full of energy for being 6 years old.  I think a lot of it is nervous energy because as she gets used to us she is getting calmer. So far no issues at all with her and my 65 lb dog Trip, and they get along fine.  She is a little nippy about food time and sharing toys but I'm curious to see if that will go away as she gets comfortable. So far we haven't seen too much interaction between her and the cats. She seems interested and charged at the girl (who outweighs her by about 7 pounds!) who hissed at her ,which made Alice turn and run in the opposite direction. I will let you know how they do tomorrow as they all settle in! So far no potty accidents or chewing problems, and she did well with bath time. She loves to play with toys. She does limp still from the broken leg and we really had to try to limit her activity to help with that.

Foster Update:  Alice is doing great with the cats! Now that it finally stopped raining I can take her for walks and she loves it. She willingly gets in her crate at night time (we have a superplush crate mat so she loves it) and sleeps through the night. She hardly ever barks and loves to play with squeaky toys. Loves to get under the covers and sleep by your feet.

Foster Update:  Alice has been exposed to twin 1 years olds, and a 3 and 12 year old and did GREAT with all of them, no nipping at all. She is high energy and does best if she gets a long morning walk (even better if it is a run, she loves loves loves to run!) and a least a short evening walk. She has had no potty accidents at all, eats well in the same room as my dog (she loves food and is highly food motivated but very pushy when she sees us getting the food ready she will jump and bark and twirl so we are working on her food manners),and does good at bath time we wash her in the laundry room sink and it takes less than 5 minutes! I have noticed that she does not limp at all anymore. She loves chew toys, squeaky toys and to play tug of war. She sleeps in the bed or in the crate and will sleep until you get up. She gets along great with the cats, they will share a bed or lay together on couch. She shares her toys well now and is not nippy at all. When she first came to us she was very nervous and now that she is comfortable she is the sweetest dog.

Alice qualifies for our Seniors for Seniors program!  If adopted by a senior (55+) her adoption fee is $125.

*** According to www.dogbreedinfo.com the Rat Terrier was named by the preceptive Teddy Roosevelt. They were develope in Great Britain originally from Smooth Fox Terriers and Manchester Terriers in 1820. They were brought to the USA in the 1890's. At that time they were all their original color of black and tan. Life Magazine showed President Roosevelt with three black and tan Rat Terriers. American breeders crossed them again with the Smooth Fox Terrier as well as the Beagle and Whippet. The Beagle increased bulk, trailing and hunting ability, along with the red color. Whippet contributed the speed and agility and probably the blue and brindle colors. The smallest variety was derived from the Smooth Fox Terrier and Chihuahua. The Rat Terrier proved to be one of the best in the rat-baiting pits. One Rat Terrier is reported to have killed over 2,501 rats in a span of only seven hours in a rat infested barn. The Rat Terrier is a hard-working farm hand, able to rid an infested barn of vermin with no problem. The Rat Terrier is an intelligent, alert and loving dog. Very inquisitive and lively. This affectionate dog makes an excellent companion for those who will enjoy an energetic dog. They are good with children, especially if they are raised with them from puppyhood. They are fairly territorial, and for the most part friendly with strangers. Rat Terriers make good watchdogs. These dogs are quick and very playful and are not yappers. The temperament of these dogs is pure terrier. The lively, feisty, fearless nature can be found in the best of terriers. They are eager to please and respond and pick training up faster than most dogs. The Rat terrier is a very well mannered, well rounded dog. They are easy to train and very eager to learn and to please their owner. They love to go with you and to do what you do. They are also very good swimmers, not bashful or afraid and have no problem with the water. They make good farm dogs as well as excellent family dogs for pets and companionship. This hardy dog is used for hunting expeditions as well as terrier work. They are easy adjusted as mature dogs into families with or without children. They have a life expectancy of about 15 to 18 years.
