Description: Admit it ~ you love this dog!!! I know I do! Boozer is a young St. Bernard with perhaps a touch of Bernese Mountain dog. He is an absolute gem, a big gem grant you at 100 pounds, but a gem none the less. According to his owner, "Boozer loves to play and swim for short periods of time. He also enjoys walks at night when it's a little cooler. He’s mostly a lazy teddy bear who enjoys sleeping, and lounging around. I would rate his activity level as low.
Boozer is the friendliest dog I have ever meet. He gets along with all dogs, people, kids, cats. He has never been agressive towards anything. He is a loveable, sweet dog. He truly gets along with everyone. Due to his size he can be overwhleming to smaller childern. He loves to give "High Fives" so parents need to be aware of that when around smaller childern. He grew up with smaller dogs and he seems to be unaware of his size at times. Boozer is a big loveable teddy bear. If there was any possible way of keeping him I would do so. I have never met anyone who hasn't instantly fallen in love with and vise versa. He loves kids, other pets and anything that will pay attention to him. When ever you want to get up and go play, run, or swim he is right there with you and at the same time if you feel like laying around he will be more than willing to do that as well. Boozer is extremely well behaved; he can be a little hard headed at times (like cutting his toe nails). People and animals alike seem to gravitate towards him and because of his size and personality he will always attract attention. One thing that will scare you at first is that he loves to sleep in the bathtub during the summer because it is cooler. Trust me the first few times he hauled his lard butt in the tube I thought the walls were caving in. You are in for a treat when you adopt this dog. If it wasn’t for my responsibilities of being a firefighter and caring for my grandmother, there would be no way that I would give him up. " OK, now admit it ~ if you didn't love him before, you do now! I wonder if I could talk my husband into just one more dog....
According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, this is a very ancient breed. It was founded in AD 980 by St Bernard de Menthon as a refuge for travelers through the perilous Alpine pass between Switzerland and Italy. It is descended from the Tibetan mastiff and therefore must have originated with the mastiff brought to the Alps by the Romans around the year 1000. The monks probably crossed the ancient mastiff with the Great Dane and the Great Pyrenees. Its use and popularity as a rescue dog began in the middle of the seventeenth century. The Saint Bernard was used as an avalanche and rescue dog in the snowy passes near the Hospice. More then 2,000 people have been saved by this amazing servant of mankind. The dogs search out and find the lost or injured traveler, and then lick him and lie next to him to give him warmth. Then one dog from the party heads back to the Hospice to get a full rescue team. The Saint Bernard's sense of smell is so excellent that he can find a person even under many feet of snow. This breed is also known for his ability to foretell storms and avalanches, perhaps because he may hear very low frequency sounds that are beyond our ability to hear. There are two varieties: short-haired and long-haired. The short-haired variety is more often used for mountain work because he can tolerate cold temperatures. The long-haired variety's coat tends to collect icicles. Some of the Saint Bernard's talents are search & rescue, watchdogging and carting. They are extremely gentle and friendly and very tolerant of children. The Saint Bernard is slow moving, patient, and obedient. Extremely loyal, this breed wants to please. Since this dog is so giant, be sure to socialize it very well at a young age with other people. It is highly intelligent and easy to train, however training should begin early, while the dog is still a manageable size. Bear in mind that an unruly dog of this size presents a problem for even a strong adult if it is to be exercised in public are
