7/24 Volunteer update: VELVET is a gentle, lovable Cocker. She has gorgeous eyes and a delightful disposition. She is a typical Cocker in that she is a bit timid when meeting folks at first, but then warms up and is giving kisses. VELVET is crate trained and does not whine or cry when riding in the car. She gets along well with other dogs, both big and small. She enjoyed the attention of the folks walking by who bent to say hello and pet her. VELVET did tremble when the family with 4 kids (ages 2 and up) came by and circled her at once, but allowed them to pet her and give treats. She knows 'sit,' 'down' and takes treats gently from your hand. She spent the day out of the crate with other dogs and volunteers and was quite happy to be in someone's lap. She is fine in the crate, does not whine or cry in the car. VELVET had no issues being handled, and her ears, mouth, toes, etc are all good to poke and touch. Still a young gal, she would do best with in a home where she can have daily activity and continued socialization to ensure she does not become timid with new situations. Any family situation ( single person or family, other animals or not) would be good for VELVET, either in a home or apt, as long as she is given time with her people and attention. Truly a delightful dog~It was rough leaving her at the end of the day.
According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, Cocker Spaniels are cheerful, sweet, and sensitive. The Cocker Spaniel is respectful of its master's authority without much challenge. Merry and endearing. A happy tail-wagger. Gentle and trusting, with average intelligence. They are lively, playful and devoted. Cockers will do okay in an apartment if they are adequately exercised, and are fairly active indoors. A small yard is sufficient. The American Cocker Spaniel is smaller than the English Cocker Spaniel and has a different conformation. The name "Cocker" comes from the woodcock, a game bird these spaniels flushed particularly well. Today, the Cocker Spaniel serves primarily as a companion and glamorous show dog. It can also be used for hunting, tracking, retrieving, watchdogging and agility. They have a life expectancy of 12-15 years.
