Pancake came to us via the local pound. He does best with dogs his own size but would love to be the only dog as well! He has good experence with cats and is housebroken. He does have food guarding when it comes to other dogs so must be fed completely seperately from other animals. Otherwise this guy is sweet loving and affectionate!
Foster update 8/15/11: Just wanted to drop a few lines about Pancake and how he's doing.
Pancake has been wonderful. He's been with me for 4 days so far and he has acclimated VERY well. He's great with people. I am a single person. He's very clean. He shed a little in the car trip from the kennel but not much at all after that (Perhaps because of nerves). He was great in the car. I let him run free in the house while I'm away and he is a very good boy. He didn't eat for the first 2 days but I put him in his crate with his food and it was gone in minutes. He is a fantastic snuggler and he loves to be loved and fawned over. You can tell he likes being the center of attention. I've had a few people over to say hello to him and he is just as pleasant with them as he is with me. He is very loyal to his owner... I can tell because even with a house with a few people he still sticks by my side. This dog is perfect for a single person or a couple with no kids. He's Housetrained and lets you know when he has to go out.
Foster Update 7/11/11: We have only had Pancake for a day but he has adjusted well. He is very loving and affectionate. He rides well in the car. He allows me to hold him like a baby and rub his belly. He is full of energy and can run full force whipping through the house. He is pretty quiet only barking when he gets playful. Pancake is potty trained. He scratches at the door when he wants to go out. Could use some training on the leash. He is a puller. Pancake gets along with my dog but will guard his food and his people. He will growl and block my dog from having access to the kitchen or from getting on the couch with us at times especially if we have food. Once my dog is on the couch Pancake seems to be fine. I would recommend Pancake to a family with no other pets or small children. He has lunged towards me when trying to correct him in his guarding while sitting on the couch guarding my daughter who happened to have food with her. This seems to be the only negative behavior but can be corrected with proper training. Pancake sleeps through the night in his create. He is very soft and fluffy and has such a cute face. He would make a great family pet.
Foster Update July 17th: Pancake continues to be a sweet and affectionate dog. He does well at bath time and is a ball of energy when he is in the mood to play. He occasionally plays with his toy and we have seen him chase his tail one time. He continues to have guarding issues over both food and water to the point he will not allow my dog in the kitchen. We have discovered he also guards his favorite person in the family which can present a problem when other family member approach. Due to this new issue we have discovered, I feel it is best that Pancake be with a single person and also remain the only dog in the family. He enjoys sleeping with my daughter at night but will also sleep in his create through out the night. Pancake will make a wonderful pet for a single person. He will allow you to hold and love on him and play. He loves to be rubbed on his belly and makes a great lap dog. He loves his car rides and to look out the window.
Foster Update 8.20.11: Pancake is doing great. He's a Lovely Lovely Dog! I trust him in the house. Loves to be cuddled with. GREAT in the car. My parents took him over to their house a few times. We've been told that he doesn't do well with other dogs. Yes he is territorial however. I truly believe he has not been introduced to other animals properly. The other dogs acclimated to him very easily. He wants to be the center of attention. He is a a Great Lap dog. He's fantastic on the leash, No Pulling or anything. He loves to play. It's so cute... He comes in from a walk and he immediately runs around the house in a cute spastic way until he is tired. He warms up to people very easily and is a very very loyal dog. I've only put him in his crate once or twice since I've had him. Very Very Good Boy!
Foster Update 9.2.11: Pancake is doing great. He spent the past week with my parents neighbor who is an older woman. She told me he was a good boy and that she loved having him around. She let him sleep in the bed with her. She was surprised that Pancake didn't go to the bathroom once inside the house. He is REALLY well trained. When he wants to go out he will let you know. When he's hungry he will let you know. This is a very Low Maintenance Dog. He loves to be cuddled. She also said she trusted him out of the crate when she left the house. She also reported that when Pancake met up with other animals on walks he was fine and friendly.
According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, Pekingese where regarded as manifestation of the legendary Foo Dog that drove away spirits. They were venerated as semi-divine by the Chinese. Commoners had to bow to them; you were punished by death if you stole one, and when an emperor died, his Pekingese were sacrificed so that they could go with him to give protection in the afterlife. In 1860 the Pekingese reached the West. British and French troops over ran the Summer Palace during the Second Opium War. Imperial Guards were ordered to kill the little dogs to prevent them from falling into the hands of the "foreign devils," but five Pekingese survived and were taken to Queen Victoria, who named it appropriately, "Looty." It is from these canine spoils of war that the modern Pekingese is descended. Pekingese are very brave little dogs, courageous to the point of foolhardiness! They are sensitive, independent and extremely affectionate with their master, but are wary of strangers. They are obstinate, self-willed and may be difficult to feed and are sometimes known to refuse to eat as much to show dominance over its owner as to lack of appetite. If overfed, Pekingese will quickly become overweight. They are loving to the point of jealousy. They tend to bark a lot and make good watchdogs. Not recommended for young children who are too rough. This breed may be difficult to housebreak. They have an life expectancy of 10-15 years.
