Foster Update:  Hunter is extremely smart and very eager to please. He has a very youthful, playful personality. Loves fetch and playing with other dogs. He des great in the enclosed area without a leash. He responds very well to voice correction, although it took him a little bit of time to adjust to a structured household! He loves to be by your side at all times, and is very alert to your movements. However, he can also lay and play with his toys or chew on a tasty bone for hours. He LOVES his toys, but does not chew on any household items that he knows are not his!! If you're on the couch, he loves to rest his head on your leg while you pet him, as he is always looking for any kind of human touch or attention. Hunter is a very affectionate, sweet dog!

Here is some more info about Hunter’s personality and training from his foster mom:

  • High energy level and needs an active, structured lifestyle -- he currently runs every day on a treadmill for 30 minutes at 4.2 mph to get his energy out
  • Due to his activity/energy level, Hunter eats 1.5 cups twice a day
  • Crate trained and house trained
  • Easily goes into his crate by request, but doesn’t regularly hang out in his crate
  • Pulls on his leash some but he’s getting better each day. He’s walked with a gentle lease lead and it works very well for him
  • Does have a high prey drive and will attempt to chase cats or squirrels if not walked properly; also should live in a cat-free home
  • Knows Wait, Sit, Down, Off & Shake
  • Sits before he is allowed to do anything, including eating, going outside, coming inside, etc.
  • Not allowed to jump up on people or furniture
  • He jumps right into the car and rides very well in the backseat – he puts his head on the middle console sometimes
  • Sleeps very well throughout the night and rarely wakes me up to go out -- he will wait until I'm up to go!

*** According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
