Lady Blue came to our local vets office after being rescued from another local kill shelter! She is a healthy happy dog who is looking for a loving and affectionate owner. She is a bit skittish upon first meeting people and will some times "hit the floor" if scared! She needs an owner who understands that she needs a little incouragement to really get her personality out there! I have a feeling she will blossom in a new home once given the chance! She has very striking eyes and loves cuddling in your lap.

Foster Update 6/23/11: LADY BLUE is a Catahoula mix with striking blue eyes. She loves to be petted by most people and kids; she loves other dogs and just ignores our cats and turtles. However, as a Catahoula, she has growled a few times at one of my daughter's friends and at my boyfriend and she does have a protective nature towards her people and is a great watchdog. She would do best in an experienced (Catahoula) home or with owners who understand her nature and are willing to socialize her with new folks and situations.

She is generally a very good dog: very well behaved and calm, obedient, quiet, good on the leash, loves to walk with us, does not chew on things in the house, eats well and has no problems being in the crate. She is not yet housebroken, so we are working on that. She is still timid and very cautious when in a new environment or meeting new people especially men...she is very relaxed and playful in our house now and we love her so much!

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog is independent, protective, and territorial. Loving with their family and all people they know well and reserved with strangers (this would include strange children). They need to make up to a person, not a person make up to them. Of course there are temperaments on both sides of this, but this is for the average dog. They mature right around 2 and it is as if a light goes on and they say to themselves "I am an adult now and I need to act grown up." This breed's reservation with strangers should not be noticed in a pup, but will show as the dog matures. Although affectionate with his master, the Catahoula is not recommended for the casual pet owner who is uninterested in allowing the dog to function in his intended capacity. For the right owner, this is a protective yet dominating canine. Signs of timidly on a leash should not be taken as cowardness, but the intolerance for strangers. This breed needs a dominant owner who shows strong leadership. They have of life expectancy of 12-13 years.

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, despite the misleading name, the Australian Shepherd is not Australian at all, but was developed entirely in the U.S. to work as a herding dog on ranches. It is possible that the name was derived from one of the dog's ancestors. The breed's principal forebears were most likely Spanish dogs that accompanied the Basque shepherds and herds of fine Merino sheep exported to both America and Australia in the early days of the colonies. At some point it probably crossed with Collie stock. It has only recently gained recognition as a distinct breed. Its many talents include, retrieving, herding, watchdogging, guarding, police work, narcotics detection, search & rescue, agility, competitive obedience and performing tricks. Australian Shepherds are easy going, perpetual puppies that love to play. Courageous, loyal and affectionate, they are excellent children's companions that are great with active children. A devoted friend and guardian, for they are naturally protective. Very lively, agile and attentive - they are eager to please, with a sixth sense about what the owner wants. Australian Shepherds are highly intelligent and easy to train. Though aggressive when at work with livestock, the Aussie is gentle with human friends. Australian Shepherds needs lots of exercise and a job to do, as the breed is very intelligent, active and easily bored. They can become nervous and destructive if left alone too much without exercise. They are naturally suspicious of strangers, so they should be well socialized as puppies. Working lines of Australian Shepherds may be too energetic to be suitable pets. Some like to nip people's heals in an attempt to herd them. They are quiet workers, unlike some breeds, which are bred to bark constantly at livestock. This breed is not usually dog aggressive. They have a life expectancy of 12-15 years. This breed is often sensitive to ivermectin; however, the dosage for heartworm preventive is considered safe. Be warned that higher doses of Ivermectin are also used to treat mange and caution should be taken.
