9/16 Volunteer update: Gibbs is what we'd call "an excited pee-er."  Gibbs gets so excited at  the thought of attention or belly rubs, that he pees a little bit.  We feel it is a habit that can be broken with some patience and consistency.
Foster Update September 2011 -

Gibbs was an absolute sweetheart, but unfortunately Gibbs and my dog, Tic Tac did not get along... Both wanted to be the boss so I we unfortunately could not foster Gibbs. The two dogs just growled at each other with one fight. Gibbs did fine with my other dog, because Yippie will walk away from things if another dog wants them, so he and Gibbs did just fine.

Gibbs knows sit very well, but he is very high energy so you really have to wait on him to calm down.  He figured out real quick (about thirty minutes) that my treat bag is permanently attached to my hip... So he had no problem coming up to me and I calmly waited for him to sit before he got the treat (kibble).  Sometimes he would take a second to do it other times I waited closer to a minute for him to get through his shenanigans.

I was always very patient getting him out of his crate.  One time I literally took twenty minutes to get him out cause I wanted him to learn to sit and wait for the release.  He's a great dog, he could use an owner that would enjoy walking him a lot, and with a great deal of patience.  I wouldn't say they have to be a strong leader, just patient enough to set limits and wait for him to comply.  I say this because he seems a little fearful.  He was afraid of a beach ball, a bird bath, a pair of shoes in the wrong place, and a few other things.  He was also possessive around the other dogs, but not towards my husband or I. If I had no other dogs, or even just Yippie, I would adopt him myself. I love his personality.  But I couldn't make Tic miserable and I didn't want him to be uncomfortable either.

Gibbs just needs some guidance and a few months of a patience to turn into really great companion. (Of course a little training would be helpful too.)

Little Gibbs came to us from an elderly couple that couldn't bear for their neighbor to "get rid of him."  After caring for him for several weeks, they realized that when you are in your 70s, a puppy might not be the right fit.  We gladly took this little guy in.*We named him Gibbs after the character Mark Harmon plays on NCIS. . . which is one of Judy's favorite TV shows.

Volunteer update: Gibbs is a typical Jack Russell puppy...all energy. He can be a bit dominant with other dogs and will need a strong pack leader due to his stubborn personality! He is a sweetheart but is a whirlwind of energy and feistiness! We hope to find a forever home for him with an experenced Jack Russell or terrier home!

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, ... are a big dog in a little body. They have the same need (or more!) for exercise as a much larger dog... and the mentality to match -- they think they are at least 150 pounds, and are fearless, often challenging other dogs three times their size. Require firm, consistent discipline. They are extremely intelligent, continue to test their limits throughout their life. More often than not, train their owners before the owner knows what has happened! This ability to train their owners can include displays of aggressive behavior. Their assertive nature must be understood and handled properly. the Jack Russell Terrier was developed in 19th century England by a clergyman named Jack Russell. This feisty little terrier was used to hunt small game, particularly fox, by digging the quarry out of its den. Breeders have emphasized its working ability, so the standard is very broad, encompassing a wide range of accepted body types. On English hunts, the Jack Russell Terriers were supposed to be long-legged enough to keep up with the hounds. The energetic and playful Jack Russell makes a good family companion. The Jack Russell Terrier is a perky, merry, devoted, and loving dog. Spirited and obedient, yet absolutely fearless. Careful and amusing, he enjoys games and playing with toys. Friendly and generally kind to children who have been taught not to tease or strike the dog. They are intelligent, yet willful and determined. They have strong hunting instincts (stronger than your average terrier) and should not be trusted with other small animals. They like to chase and explore. Be careful not to let them off the lead unless they are very well-trained. Jack Russells like to bark and dig. They tend to get restless and destructive if not kept fruitfully occupied and well exercised. Jack Russells climb, which means they can climb over a fence, they also jump. A Jack that stands 12 inches high can easily jump five feet. JRTs are not the breed for a inexperienced dog owner. This is a BIG dog in a little dogs body. The owner needs to be as strong-willed as they are, or this little guy will take over.
