Description:

Otis came from a shelter which had a tragic fire that destroyed everything! We took him and tons of other dogs! He is so cute looks like a dachshund but his brother looks like a mix so who would have though!

Foster update 4/21: Otis is an amazing dog! All love and affection once he gets over his shyness! He LOVES the dog park and is VERY social with all type of dogs! He currently is staying with 6 large breed dogs and he just jumps in and out of there legs if he wants to get by.. He love people as well and enjoys his belly be scratched and cuddling in the bed at night! This guys perfect home would be in a multi dog home with a fenced in yard (he really is horrible on the leash and doesn't feel comfortable on it at all) with someone whom would like to take him to the dog park or a fenced in area for him to zoom around in! He doe come when called but i don't let him off lead or loose unless in my yard or the park! He is very much housebroken and crates excellently! He does not chew anything in my home and seems to basically ignore my cats! The PERFECT dog! I still feel he wouldn't do well with young kids but i think over 12 or so will be fine!

Foster update 4/15 :I took Otis home because everyone said he was very scared and had nipped at people!  He was a perfect gentlemen for me and has learned to trust me already! He gets along Excellently with my dogs and cats! He seems housetrained and does well in the crate as well! He does have a bolting thing going on so if opening the doors, or go outside i always leash him...He loves being outside and seems very interested in all things in nature. He is pretty bad on the leash but is only a small guy so he wouldn't pull you down or anything. I really think he just needs some cofidence and he wouldn't be so skitty on the leash! He loves food and is VERy treat motivated. Because he can be a bit scared i would not recommend small children..but older children i think would be fine!

Medical update: Otis came to us with a history of idopathic siezures...i have had him of about 3 1/2 weeks and had not seen any activity until this week. He had a minor serzure at the dog park and recovered fully a couple hours later. The vet does not recommend puting him on medication unless they become very frequent. I personally have a dog who has seizures and have not had him on medication for about 5 years. Anyone that adopts him will just need to keep an eye on him and hold him or comfort him if he has a seizure!

Like many dogs in the South, Ottis is heartworm positive, but don't let that stop you from adopting a great dog.  We are treating him with monthly heartworm preventative, our preferred method.  Many heartworm positive dogs go on to lead long and healthy lives.

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Dachshund (pronounced dak sund) originated in Germany many hundreds of years ago. "Dachs" is the word for badger. The Dachshund was bred to hunt and follow these animals to earth, gradually becoming highly evolved, with shortened legs to dig the prey out and go down inside the burrows. Smaller Dachshunds where bred to hunt hare and stoat. Dachshunds have many "terrier" characteristics. They are versatile and courageous dogs and have been known to take on foxes and otters, besides badgers. Lively and affectionate; proud and bold, almost rash. Tenacious. Can be willful and clownish. Curious and mischievous, they are very clever and may attempt to train the owner rather than allow the opposite. Devoted to his family, some fanciers feel the long-haired variety is calmer than the other two types. The wire-haired variety is more outgoing and clown-like. All are slightly difficult to train. Dachshunds are good dogs to travel with. They are best with older, considerate children and are moderately protective. These little dogs like to bark (their barks are surprisingly loud for their size) and are compulsive diggers. They are generally okay with other pets, however, they can be jealous, irritable, obstinate and very quick to bite. Sometimes they will refuse to be handled. They should not be over fed, for this breed tends to gain weight quickly. They have a life expectancy of 12-15 years.
