Description:

Foster Update 4/7 - Sage is a wonderful dog, already she has become one of my favorite fosters, shes just so patient and loving. She loves to cuddle and play in the back yard. She loves to play fetch, although we're working on trying to get her to stop burying the the balls afterward. She only chews on her toys, but isn't protective of them at all. My son came and took her duck right out of her mouth and she just went and got a different toy. She has zero food aggression, and takes her treats gently out of our hands. She does tend to beg, but we're working on that as well. I don't know what her life was before she came to the shelter but judging by the way she flinches sometimes if we move too fast, I'm thinking she had a rough life. But other then the flinching you wouldn't know, she's just so sweet and loving! And she's just so wonderful with my young son, I think she'd do great in a home with kids. I've never seen her around cats as we don't have any, but when she meets other dogs on our walks, she greats them and is friendly. The same goes for when she meets new people, she's very friendly and affectionate, but not overly so. She doesn't like to be left alone for too long and tends to follow me everywhere, she's just a truely great dog and a joy to have around. She is crate and house trained. As before mentioned, she loves to play but is also very relaxed, at night she loves to just lay next to us and watch tv. I think she'll make a great addition to any home or family.

Foster Update:  Sage is a really great dog, she doesn't even mind when my son gets a little rough with her, he tripped and fell banging his head on hers and she didn't even care - just licked his face!  She slept in the bed with us last night and always likes to cuddle and be with us. I think she thinks she's a lap dog cause she keeps trying to lay on our laps when we sit on the couch and doesn't realize shes just too big!  She's very sweet though and seems to have a great and loving personality.

Sage came to us from Winter Park Lost Pets. Poor girl was found as a stray and they have been trying to find her home for a while! They just couldn't see her put into a shelter so they called us! We hope to find a forever home that won't let her wander again!

Like many dogs in the South, Sage is heartworm positive, but don't let that stop you from adopting a great dog.  We are treating her with monthly heartworm preventative, our preferred method.  Many heartworm positive dogs go on to lead long and healthy lives.

*** According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
