Foster Update 05/29/11: This poem was made by Exciting Xavier's foster mom's son.
Exciting Xavier is happy and sweet
This is the one you have to meet
Come check him out so you can see
What an amazing dog he will be.

Xavier is truly a happy puppy. He has just turned 7 months old. He gets along with everyone and everything. Even though he is still a puppy, he is relatively calm and well trained. He doesn’t jump up on you and he sits and lays down on command. Laying down will sometimes require a treat. but he sits every time.

He is housetrained. We have a doggy door that he is using, but before he knew how to use that, he would walk around in circles and whimper. You have to watch and listen for those clues or he could have an accident. He is a high energy dog and breed. Even though he doesn’t jump and is calm in that sense, he is always looking for something to do.  He wants to play or run or play or move or play and chew….do you get that feeling that he wants to play? : )

He will chew shoes and dog collars and hairbrushes if left in reach.  He needs something to do and appropriate things to chew on. He would do best with an active family that has a fenced yard, preferably a doggy door, and kids and/or another young dog to play with. His people being at home would be another great thing.

He is crate trained but he doesn’t like it all that well. I definitely crate him when I am away, but try not to leave him alone for long periods repeatedly in his crate. That would be unfair to him.

Xavier is a great happy dog without any issues and would be a great companion for someone who has the time and energy to give him. He needs your attention and will not happy to be a passive house pet to be ignored.

Xavier and his siblings came to us from a high kill shelter. We call them lab mixes but they are so mixed up its hard to tell a specific breed. They are really sweet and need forever homes!

*** According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
