Description:
Gracie was rescued by a volunteer orginally.  She was adopted in October 2010, but her family has a small child and Gracie was showing some food aggression issues.  The former family did not want to work with her on it.  She is a 6 year old Shiloh/German Shepherd. She loves to lick. And I do mean lick! Her tongue seems to be 10 miles long.  She is a great dog in so many ways. She does not bark unless she senses or hears a threat. She makes a terrific watch dog.  Grace is also very smart. When she wants to come in the house she comes to the door and knocks, doesn't scratch on the glass or the door.  She actually uses her paw to gently knock to let you know she's ready to come in. She will whine to get you to follow her if she wants to tell you something, and when she gets excited she wags her head around and jumps (it's very cute :).  Gracie knows several commands, such as Come, Sit, Down, and Shake.  She is very independent but does like to be loved on every day, especially on her rear right over her tail!  She's very active and loves the dog park -- she is happiest when taken there several times a week.  She's a great running partner and can run for 3 miles!  In the hot months she's used to being shaved down so she didn't get too hot with all that fur!  She has lived with a cat but would chase it when not supervised.  Her favorite treats are Denta-Stix.

Gracie's food aggression is only with human food. She sometimes growls if you drop food on the floor then reach to pick it up. If you put human food in her bowl, then reach to grab the bowl she will growl to warn you off. These behaviors happened on a few occasions, not constantly, and we discounted them because they were pretty mild. If she is sleeping and you bump into her, she will wake up barking at you. This has gotten better over time as we have discouraged it consistently.  She is also very anxious about thunderstorms. She will claw and climb on you as soon as she hears (senses) one coming and cannot calm down until it has passed.

***According to dogbreedinfo.com, in April 1899, Capt. Max von Stephanitz registered a dog named Horan as the first Deutsche Schäferhunde, which means German Shepherd Dog in English. Known for their tremendous loyalty and courage, they are calmly confident, but not hostile. This breed needs his people and should not be left isolated for long periods of time. They only bark when it is necessary. Serious and almost human in his intelligence, they have a high learning ability. The breed is so intelligent and learns so readily that it has been used as a sheepdog, guard dog, in police work, as a guide for the blind, in search and rescue service, and in the military. The German Shepherd also excels in many other dog activities including schutzhund, tracking, obedience, agility, flyball, and ring sport. His fine nose can sniff out drugs and intruders, and can alert handlers to the presence of underground mines in time to avoid detonation, or gas leaks in a pipes buried 15 feet underground. A quick daily brushing is best unless hair in the house is not a problem. They should be bathed rarely, only once or twice a year to avoid skin oil depletion. Shepherds have a life expectancy around 13 years.
