Morgan is well-behaved at bathtime and really loves being dried and combed (and sheds very little, as a bonus!). She loves anything that involves being touched or cuddled! She loves to jump in bed with you and nuzzle her face under your arm... SO cute! She also knows Off just in case you want her to get back down. She will sleep soundly during the night without a problem. Morgan also knows Sit, Down, Wait, Fetch, Drop It, No, and Paw. She's so smart!! She could probably learn any trick you'd ever want to teach her. When she wants to play fetch or to give you something (like a toy or blanket), she will flip her head up and "toss" it to you. She can get lighter toys pretty high up in the air!! She is SUPER friendly towards other dogs and always wants to play and give her new playmates kisses on the mouth!
Because of her high intelligence, she really needs to be kept active and mentally stimulated, or she easily becomes bored and will dig in the yard or find other interesting things to do on her own. Because of her energy level though she may be overwhelming for smaller children and sometimes still "mouths" when playing.
Foster Update: Morgan is adjusting very well to our family and loves running around our big back yard. My 3 year old who had been jumped on by a dog about a year ago was still a bit frightened of dogs and was intimidated by Morgan's size, but now uses her as a pillow when she lays next to him on the couch. She loves to give kisses and play tug-of-war. We have a cat that she is interested in playing with but has never touched her and ignores her most of the time. I was hoping Morgan would be a good running buddy in the morning before work, but she is more of a snuggle up and hit snooze type of girl! We are working on her walking skills as she would prefer to drag me around while she discovers the area. She also gets very impatient in the car when I run into school to pick up the kids, so we are working on that as well.
***According to dogbreedinfo.com, in April 1899, Capt. Max von Stephanitz registered a dog named Horan as the first Deutsche Schäferhunde, which means German Shepherd Dog in English. Known for their tremendous loyalty and courage, they are calmly confident, but not hostile. This breed needs his people and should not be left isolated for long periods of time. They only bark when it is necessary. Serious and almost human in his intelligence, they have a high learning ability. The breed is so intelligent and learns so readily that it has been used as a sheepdog, guard dog, in police work, as a guide for the blind, in search and rescue service, and in the military. The German Shepherd also excels in many other dog activities including schutzhund, tracking, obedience, agility, flyball, and ring sport. His fine nose can sniff out drugs and intruders, and can alert handlers to the presence of underground mines in time to avoid detonation, or gas leaks in a pipes buried 15 feet underground. A quick daily brushing is best unless hair in the house is not a problem. They should be bathed rarely, only once or twice a year to avoid skin oil depletion. Shepherds have a life expectancy around 13 years.
