Description:

Scrappy is a sweet dog with a little underbite who was found roaming the streets.  The person who found him posted for him with no luck.  She then brought him to PRBJ where we reported him and began the search for his family.  Unfortunately, his family never came forward and there was no microchip to help us locate them.  He is loving and playful. He is very energetic and enjoys barking and running around in the yard.  He gets very excited when he is with people and jumps all over them and his kisses can be more like little nips.

Scrappy has played well with other dogs, especially other smaller dogs.    Older children would be best with Scrappy since he is a little guy.   Scrappy has done well with my cat, but then she is a very dog-friendly cat.

A fenced backyard is a must for Scrappy as he is very fast and agile .  Many terriers are clever escape artists who will go over or under fences in search of adventure so they should always be monitored in the yard and never allowed off leash outside of the fenced aea.  Most terriers have strong instincts to chase and seize small fleeing creatures (i.e., lizards).

Traits:

Terriers are affectionate, loving, quick to bark, quick to chase, lively,  feisty,  clever, independent, persistent, impulsive, and intense.   They need exercise and mental stimulation such as regular obedience classes at the intermediate or advanced level or in ongoing agility classes or a backyard agility course.

Grooming:

  • Use a pin brush weekly to reach through the undercoat and groom the rough topcoat.
  • Periodic hand-stripping or routine clipping is needed.
  • Bathe rarely because of the waterproof double-coat—choose a “hard-coat” shampoo.
  • Keeping the hair around the eyes trimmed helps keep them healthy (and able to see).
  • Toes - this is an active breed.  Feet hair should be well-maintained.
