Description:
Gracie is a pure bred German Shepherd, found as a stray and bought to Judy to find her perfect forever home.
Gracie is a wonderful girl, and although she probably hasn't been shown love and didn't know what cuddles, kisses and toys were, she soon learned how to play and show affection to us. She loves to play fetch and will happily run after a ball, bring it back and wait for you to throw it again. She is a talker, and if she wants something she will sit in front of you and "talk" until you work out what it is she wants, whether its to go out or a treat! She is fully house trained and really enjoys walks. We don't know what she is like with cats but does seem to want to chase small animals so cats may be a bad idea! Although she hasn't lived with any children while with us, she has been in contact with children as young as 18 months and was great with them. We have four other dogs and she gets along with all of them great although she does like to be the Queen Bee in the household! Gracie deserves all the attention as she has many years of being unloved to make up for!

Like many dogs in the South, Gracie is heartworm positive.  Don't let this scare you!  You can read about the condition on our webpage "Heartworms In Dogs."  We are treating her with monthly heartworm preventive, our preferred method.  It is less harsh and doesn't require the pet be kept quiet for months. So come meet Gracie and fall in love!!!

***According to dogbreedinfo.com, in April 1899, Capt. Max von Stephanitz registered a dog named Horan as the first Deutsche Schäferhunde, which means German Shepherd Dog in English. Known for their tremendous loyalty and courage, they are calmly confident, but not hostile. This breed needs his people and should not be left isolated for long periods of time. They only bark when it is necessary. Serious and almost human in his intelligence, they have a high learning ability. The breed is so intelligent and learns so readily that it has been used as a sheepdog, guard dog, in police work, as a guide for the blind, in search and rescue service, and in the military. The German Shepherd also excels in many other dog activities including schutzhund, tracking, obedience, agility, flyball, and ring sport. His fine nose can sniff out drugs and intruders, and can alert handlers to the presence of underground mines in time to avoid detonation, or gas leaks in a pipes buried 15 feet underground. A quick daily brushing is best unless hair in the house is not a problem. They should be bathed rarely, only once or twice a year to avoid skin oil depletion. Shepherds have a life expectancy around 13 years.
