Description:
Barney comes to us from Seminole County Animal Control and is such an adorable Shih Tzu.  He is currently in foster care and here's what his foster had to say about him:

I gave him a bath and cleaned him up as best I could though he will need his hair to grow out a bit and a good grooming. Looks like someone decided to give him a non-professional haircut and it’s totally uneven throughout his body.  He is not housebroken, but I started to crate train him yesterday and he did well.

I have to tell you that he was not happy with me when I was combing his matted hair, but he did not bite and he has been great with my kids.  My 3 kids,  especially my 6 yr old, have not left him alone and he is fine with them.  No issues at all.  Barney is good with my cat and my Lab.  The Lab is in his face a lot and they get along great.  Barney is also not a barker so he would do fine in an apt or condo.  I don’t think he has barked at all since coming home with me.  He is good on a leash and has done his business when out on walks.  Although not housebroken, he is picking it up quickly.  He loves to cuddle and is a happy lapdog although he enjoyed running around the yard with my Lab.

Are you unfamiliar with the Shih Tzu breed? Pronounced SHEET-sue, they are known as alert, spunky, happy and hardy. They are bred with an underbite which gives them a constant "smile." Traditionally, their coat is kept long, with ears blending into the body, distinct mustache, and a top knot secured with a bow. However, in our Florida climate, many are clipped short to relieve them of the heat. An alert watch dog, Shih Tzus like to bark but are usually quiet in the house. Originally from China, they were a favorite of the Imperial Chinese court and so revered that for many years after the Chinese began trading with the West, they refused to sell, or even give away, any of the little dogs. It was not until 1930 that the first pair was imported to England. The life expectancy of Shih Tzus in 16 years.
